For a monochromatic colour scheme, use other yellows in the same colour family, in this case a darker tone.

You can also go to another colour entirely. Yellow and green are cool and clean looking together, yellow and blue are wonderful together, yellow and chocolate brown would work if the room has lots of light.

For a monochromatic look, use a yellow of the same colour family (you will find them on the same paint strip as the Babouche) either darker or lighter as you find most pleasing.

For something a little different try a pale green or blue as contrast.

For a woman...

I have always recommended a deep burgundy, wine or maroon colour for your accent wall (usually the one the head of your bed is on) and a lighter tone (pink) of the same colour on the other three walls. Trim work is best done in white.

The sensuality of the room will come from the fabric you use in the room.

If this is a bedroom, your linens (sheets, pillowcases, bed-skirt, and if you want to go a little over the top, your canopy) should be in the best quality you can afford, and are best in white. Skip the satin sheets, they are neither comfortable nor practical. I use Egyptian cotton sheets with lace detail.

The more pillows on the bed the more luxurious it will appear. A comforter in a pattern or colour to match the accent wall will give the bed presence, while satiny fabrics are tactile and sensuous.

If you can get a bedroom set with either a canopy bed or a four-poster you will be well on your way. Dark carved woods give the impression of luxury and once again bring in a tactile element.

If there is room for a chair, make sure it is comfortable and your best choice is a well upholstered piece in a colour to match one of the colours in the comforter. I do not recommend white for upholstered furniture.

The window treatments should be white as well, lace is always nice, but a bit tough to keep clean.

As for flooring, if you choose,add an area rug if you have space, in something floral that incorporates the colours of your room. It adds another level of luxury.

Make sure you have several levels of lighting. Something on a dimmer is best for the main light, with task and mood lighting where appropriate.

For a man...

The ideas above are more or less applicable if you use either navy, sapphire or very deep blue (or Kelly, forest or deep green) for the accent wall. and a softer version for the rest of the walls.

Trim work can be either natural wood, or white.

I still like white linens, but many men prefer a colour, so a pale version of the accent wall or a neutral like silver grey with the blue or golden tan with the green work well.

Do not skimp on your comforter, there are many more "masculine" patterns available to choose from.

Furniture can be heavy and carved (no canopy, but a four poster is still good) or sleek and modern.

The window treatments may be in textured fabric instead of lace (not very masculine) or possibly wood.

Lighting is still very important for setting your mood.

If you choose to add an area rug, try a plain one with a contrasting border under your bed that extends about a foot and a half past the edge of the bed.

Finally, no matter the gender, a clean and tidy room is essential for a sensuous feel. It's tough to feel romantic if the bed is unmade and the floor is strewn with dirty laundry.

The traditional way would be to frame, if a picture, or place in a shadow box, if objects. However, a more creative way to display pictures would be to upload your pictures, have them custom printed to your desired size and then apply directly to the wall. If you use a repositionable and removable wallcovering, you can then relocate to another area within the room, another room or house altogether. Since it is repositionable, this is a project you can easily do yourself. This would be an important feature if you are renting because you would not want to leave any personal treasures behind when you move.

Girl: maybe light purples and greens, maybe blue

Boy: greens, blues, maybe a soft yellow

Aubergine and reds look good. Any Autumn color would coordinate well also.

For drama, and scale and in hot climates a high ceiling is best.

It leaves room for crown mouldings and wall treatments that have scale. It also gives the warm air a place to go, leaving the lower areas relatively cooler.

For an intimate or cozy feeling, there is nothing better than a room with a sightly lower than normal ceiling. Painted with light colours and decorated for comfort, you have a perfect den of bedroom.

Traditional decorating thought says you should not paint a ceiling anything but white.

Don't listen... but do be aware of what effect you will get.

1) If your walls are a light natural green and you paint the ceiling the same colour it will cause you to perceive the green as a bit darker. The light reflecting from the walls and ceiling will have that effect. Having the ceiling the same colour as the walls can on occasion cause the feeling of being "in a box" as the ceiling will seem a bit closer than if it were white.

2) A white ceiling will cause the room to seem a bit brighter and the ceiling itself will seem a bit higher.

3) A good compromise, if you want colour on your ceiling, is to use a lighter colour of the same green as your walls. I often add white paint to the wall paint to achieve this effect.

As for baseboards, window and door casings and other trim, there are three schools of thought here.

1) Paint all trim throughout the entire building one consistent colour. Often white or cream and sometimes natural wood, this gives you continuity throughout and eliminates the need to decide where to change colours as you go through a doorway.

2) Paint the trim the exact colour of the walls, frequently this is a "fast and dirty" fix in apartments etc where the cost of anther paint and the time required to be careful in applying it are factors in the choice. If you choose to use the same colour, please have a semi-gloss paint mixed to match as using "wall" paint on baseboards etc. leaves the areas more susceptible to scratching, chipping and damage. (Wall paint is not usually as hard as trim paint)

3) Paint the trim in another colour. Either a darker version of the wall colour, or a colour you find esthetically pleasing in combination with what you have in the room.

In all three cases I can not stress enough the importance of getting the paint mixed in a "trim" paint.

If you don't want to start over, get a soft cream paint and glaze mixture and do a rag or sponge treatment over the orange to soften it and lighten it.

I had this happen with a client, and her reaction was to want to completely redo the room. I talked her into letting me do a "wash" over it, to tone the colour down and she was delighted with the end result.

The process is quite simple, using 2 parts off white (cream) latex paint, 2 parts latex based glazing compound (for faux finishes) and 1 part water.

Mix well, saturate a pad of lint free cloth, wring out slightly and "wash" the walls, using broad sweeping loose stokes.

Be sure the paint mixture is wrung out enough not to drip, but that there is enough mixture to leave a film of colour over your top coat.

The result is a subtle toning down of the colour which leaves the impression of the orange, but not the intensity.

Actually, lime is big right now as is grey. An antique white or ivory to be more conservative. Shades of soft brown or tan are sophisticated. Just DO NOT paint the wall white!

Aqua blue is a soothing cool colour. If you are painting a bedroom or other "quiet" room, you may want to combine it with soft blue, for a restful room.

This will work well in a bedroom for either a male or female. To make the room more feminine use white accessories to make it more masculine, try accessories in a dark teal or natural wood tones.

For a more feminine look combine the aqua with a very soft raspberry pink and once again use white accents. This combination is still soothing and restful, but warmer than the blue.

Sure. You can do it a variety of ways. One popular treatment is to create stripes that run horizontally across the wall. In a room with a chair rail, you often see one color above the rail and a second complimentary color below. Ragging or sponge painting one color over another is another example.

Neutral cure silicone sealant are used in places where there is metal present. like galvanised iron , zincalume, aluminum flashing's, etc where acids can be harmful to the materials that hold the seal. however these silicone's are suitable for most sealing applications in any case.
