Why don't more burps taste like vomit?
Because the peculiar taste of vomit is created after food has sat in your stomach for a while and has had time for the stomach to excreted hydrochloric acid and other things that start breaking the food down. Once it has sat there for several hours, a burp will really taste like vomit. On the other hand, the majority of burping happens just after you eat, as you are expelling air that you swallowed while eating. In this case, these "fresh" burps will taste mostly like what you were eating. The more time something sits in your stomach, (protein will increase gastric emptying time, as do fats, so eating a meaty, fatty meal will cause these contents to sit in the stomach for hours) the more it breaks down and the more it will smell like vomit.

What is the purpose of the Digestive System?

What is the difference between a polar bears digestive system and a hummingbirds digestive system?
Digestive systems between birds and mammals, no matter what size they are, are completely different. A hummingbird has a much tinier digestive tract than, say, an ostrich or a chicken, but ultimately the same. A polar bear has the same type of digestive system as we humans do.
So, a humming bird's digestive system contains more parts to it than a polar bear's: A crop, gizzard, proventriculum, stomach, two ceca, small and large intestine, and a cloaca at the end. They also have a tiny liver, spleen and pancreas as well. Hummingbirds also lack teeth, only having their beaks and tongue to gather nectar from flowers.
A polar bear, on the other hand, has a simple stomach, small and large intestine, liver, pancreas, spleen, gall bladder, etc.

Are any of the gases expelled from the body during a bout of flatulence toxic?
Yes.
First, any of the gases found in flatulence - with the exception of oxygen - would be regarded as "toxic" if you had to exclusively breathe them. Such as hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. It would not be so much that those gases are toxic, but that you were receiving toxic amounts.
Secondly, methane is toxic, and less then levels of 100% could harm you.
Thirdly, the amounts likely to be expelled during flatulence, are not going to poison anyone.
Why does pepsin not digest sucrose?
Sucrose is a type of carbohydrate. Pepsin is a protease, so it can only digest proteins, because enzymes are specific to one kind of molecule. Sucrose would be broken down by a carbohydrase.
All nutrients are broken down into their respective monomers in order to be absorbed into the blood stream. The monomers of a protein are amino acids - this is what your body's cells use to build up other proteins.
Is there a link between the length of the digestive system and the length of the body?
No link. The digestive system is 22 feet from mouth to "exit". Todd, RN
NO, it's not normal to have cramping or nausea. Too much fiber can ruin your digestive system. You should eat as little as possible. Read the book "Fiber Menace", try doing a Google search for "Fiber Menace". Eat white rice instead of brown, peel your potatoes, and juice your citrus fruits. Cut as much fruit out from your diet as possible. Try keeping fiber below 10 grams per day so your intestines can heal. Much of the above sounds very wrong!! The recommended daily intake of fibre for an adult is 20-35g, both soluble and insoluble. Apple is only 2.5% fibre, whole peaches 1.5%, carrots are 2.8%. Unless you are eating significantlyin excess of 1.5kg (3lb) of fruit and veg' a day, excess fibre intake is VERY unlikely, although some other problem with your diet is entirely possible. Don't forget that vegetarians and vegans routinely eat considerable quantities of fibre, especially in comparison to most modern western diets of highly processed foods. You need to see a doctor not adjust your diet.
