How many colors in high definition Television?

HD television is captured and stored as a component signal using 20 bits. The separate bits are used in such a way that the data can store what is effectively a 30 bit signal so there is a theoretical 1 billion colors available.

HD video in the studio requires a bandwidth of 1.5Gb (1500 megabits per second) and for transmission, this needs to be compressed to signals that are around 5 - 6 megabits. In doing this compression, much of the color information can be lost so 1 billion colors are never seen on a domestic television. That is rarely a problem as our color perception means we are quite happy watching programs with much less color information.

How does a digital video recorder work with cable or satellite TV?

DVRs are compatible with most any cable, satellite or antenna setup. Your exact setup instructions will vary according to the type of DVR you purchase. You'll need to review your owner's manual for more information, but here are some tips:

  • Depending on your current home entertainment arrangement, you'll basically hook up your cable line to your DVR, plug your DVR into an electrical outlet, and leave your cable box as is. If you have services like TiVo or RePlay, you'll follow on-screen instructions for setting up your program guide and recording your cable channels.
  • If you have a VCR or receiver, your setup instructions may be slightly different. See your DVRs manufacturer's manual for exact instructions.

Notes about setup if you use DVR services like TiVo:

  • Some DVR services (like TiVo) require that you hook your DVR to your phone line (instead of plugging it into an outlet). The TiVo service does daily downloads of your cable company's program listings to your DVR during a pre-set time. If you have DSL and want to use a service like TiVo, place a filter on the phone line plugged into your TiVo DVR.
  • Some may be incompatible with HDTV and C-band satellite systems.

If you need help with your DVR hardware and the answers aren't in the manual, visit your DVR manufacturers web site to locate tutorials, FAQs or a support center phone number. Some of the common DVR manufacturers include:

  • TiVo: www.tivo.com
  • Philips: http://www.consumer.philips.com/?

Where to find an automoblie cassette tape cleaner?

They are getting harder and harder to find, but some electronics stores still carry them, or you can always do an internet search.

The best kind are the "wet" cleaners, that use a fluid (usually alcohol) to remove buildup from the player heads. "Dry" cleaners use an abrasive surface that can damage the heads over time.

Why a black box shows when playback a VHS tape on TV?

I'm having a hard time understanding what it is you're asking. I'm pretty sure you are asking why someone would use a digital video recorder when they could use a vhs. Well the main reason is that vhs's are really crappy and i cant think of any reason why someone would want to use a vcr instead of a dvr. My guess is that your really old and are afraid of change and new technology.

Why won't my DVR record as scheduled?

Most likely your clock is set incorrectly. If you told it to come on at 9 pm but it comes on at 9:15 am, then your clock needs to be set to the correct time.

Some DVRs get a time signal from the cable company or satellite. If this is the case, you need to set your time zone on the DVR. Satellites run on Coordinated Universal Time (the time on the Prime Meridian that runs through Greenwich, England). Some cable companies may also run in a different time zone, which will put your start-stop times off by an hour or more.

If you continue to have problems, turn off the Auto Time Set option and set the time manually.

What amount of time is a recorded program on a DVR available before it is viewed?

Usually as long as you have it stored on your DVR, and just like a VCR, you can watch it over and over again. I have some recordings that have been stored on my DVR for over two years, and they still play. Just be sure to `protect` your recording so that the DVR doesn't record over it if the drive is close to being full.

The hard drive makes a grinding noise The cause is?

The reason is most likely the drive is getting old or defective. It may be about to break down and die. Please make sure to back up all important documents, pictures, videos, mp3s to another drive before shutting down your computer.

I'd try something else first. It may indicate simply that the poor drive is working overtime to find things among umpteen Mb of rubbish - files are not stored in neat sequences. Turn off all open applications except the system tools (Control Panel & the file mapping). Give the disc a thorough cleaning - delete all those gash temporary Internet files, browsing history, cookies, data or application files you don't need or should never have kept anyway... Then run the disc analysis and de-fragmenting software accessible via "Control Panel" (assuming MS 'Windows'). This will find out if the disc needs de-fragmenting, and to what extent. If it does, set it running and leave it to its own devices. See if that helps - it certainly won't do any harm!

How do you use a dvr?

Connect its input to the output of a cable box and DVR's output to your television. If you don't have a cable / satellite set-top box, and your DVR has a built-in TV tuner, connect its input to a coax cable from your wall (raw cable feed) or a TV antenna (over the air reception), and DVR's output to your television, then scan for available channels. You should be able to watch TV through the DVR and record TV shows onto it.

What can you do if you have trouble recording your stored DVR selections to a DVD disc?

Many of the programs that you see on television are now copy protected and carry much the same protection as found on the commercial DVD's that you purchase. IN the past, I've even had the recording shut off on my computer while recording something directly from the satellite receiver. I really shouldn't be telling you this, but if you can find yourself a Sima brand `GoDVD' unit and use the composite audio and video connections from the DVR to your computer, you can generally make the thing work. One word of caution though. YOU are responsible for violating copyright laws if you copy or duplicate copywritten material. I'm just giving you this information for educational purposes only. (After all, I'm a technician and it's my job to know this stuff.) If you cant record anything new: * Make sure your disc is not write-protected. Check your owners manual for more information about unlocking your disc. * Make sure you arent trying to record copyrighted material. If you are trying to record copyrighted material, Copy Protected may be displayed on some DVRs. If you schedule a recording and it doesnt record: * Double check the time and channel you set to record. Review your manufacturers manual for detail instructions for scheduling a record. * Verify the time set on the clock. I know this seems trivial, but if your time is off it wont record! My disc isnt compatible with another DVD player * Is your recording long enough? * Is your disc finalized? Where can I get help with my DVR hardware?
