Yes in the beginning it is sad, but as the movie progresses , the mood , visuals and story becomes a whole lot more cheerful. It is one of the best animations I've seen and the sadness adds to the brilliance of the movie.

This also depends on you as a person. If you like to get into movies emotionally, you may get to the point of crying, however if you watch movies for simply entertainment, you may not find it sad. Hardcore gamers tend to get quite involved, and may find it sad.

The prison itself, with it's castle like appearance is supposed to have inspired his castle at Disneyland. Disney did have a career in the military as an ambulance driver during the First World War. That much is true. The rest is a legend, disproved by the Disney Company and the Shipyard as much as possible. Disney's castle at Disneyland seems to be drawn from a castle in Bavaria.
