It's the computer mounted to the firewall with the three sets of wires going to it. It handles all sensors, warning lights, transmission shifting (if electric), spark ignition, electronic choke..... Pretty much everything electric is handled by the PCM.

Why is no power getting to the coil on an 1989 Dodge Van?
I don't know if there is a fusable link! This is what I did. I lifted the glove box out and next to the fusebox is a flat black box (3" x 5" x 1 "), probably the electronic ignition. I unplugged it and replaced it. Further I replaced the relays (3 of them under the hood). one is located directly beside the smec computer, one is a metal relay in the middle of the firewall and the other is in between the brake booster and the batterie. I tried it again and it works. the other way is, run a wire from the batterie to the pos side of the coil (to supply power). pull one of the sparkplug wire of and stick another sparkplug in it and lay it on top of the valve cover. Crank the motor over and see if the sparkplug sparks (this is to check your coil working properly!)

You only need to find one of those and the conversion process shouldn't be terribly difficult. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Considering the costs involved if there is a problem with the electronic ignition, I'd stick with the easy to trouble shoot and cheaper to repair distributor point system.

Hey Dude: You can turn your dome light off in your van by turning your headlight switch (or dimmer switch ) all the way to the right. Left turns on your dome light, so go the opposite all the way till it clicks. It will now stay off when your door opens. .

The control switch is probably faulty (or faulty wiring to the switch and/or motor).

Is a 95 caprice 4.3v-8 and 5.7 the same block?
In a sense it is. Both are derived from the LT-1 found in the Camaro/Firebird and Corvette. The Caprice LT-1 and it's little sister, the 4.3 V8, have cast iron heads and aside from the differing bore sizes, it is the same block. Both offer the same features, such as reverse cooling, the Opti-Spark ignition system, etc, but the the 4.3 is rated at only 200 HP, versus the 5.7 at 260 HP. You can probably interchange most parts - performance and otherwise. Hope that helps.
