A puppy that trembles and shivers is probably frightened. It may have been mistreated in the past. It may be in pain. It would be a good idea to have the puppy examined by a veterinarian, and if it is healthy give it lots of cuddling and a quiet environment if possible.

Any good dog trainer will tell you that 'you' have to be the leader of the pack! They mean it. Your dogs need to know who is boss. In turn, you need to understand dog's behavior. There is the 'pecking order' which you should maintain. The oldest dog should come first when being fed or given treats. Push your hand up and towards the younger dogs nose and say 'no.' Once you have served your older pet the food or given it praise, then be sure to do the same for the younger dog. Dogs are bright and get the picture. Like children they will fight for affection and you have to be consistent in maintaining this pecking order. I have two dogs; a Bishon Frise who is the oldest, and now a Cockapoo (male) who is almost 2 years old. I always go to her first with food, treats, praise when she does something well, then will do the same to my youngest pet. They get along very well together. As I say to them, 'The eldest in the cat and she's the Queen around here; the eldest dog is the Princess and my little Cockapoo is the low one on the food chain!' LOL Don't worry all three get equal love and lots of attention.

There should be no reason that you can't leave a Pug alone like any other breed of dog. Your Pug isn't going to like it one bit at first and may suffer some 'seperation anxiety.) I buy medium round bones from the butcher and I boil or steam them. Once cooled I will put several in the freezer. When we go out I will give him our Cockapoo one of the bones. As much as he is anxious that we are out he will take his anxiety out on the bone.

If you go out during the day when you get home praise your Pug. Have play time or go for a walk. Pugs are extremely smart so they will be less anxious knowing that when you get home it's 'play time' or 'if I get real lucky it's a walk!'

i am having the same problem and cannot really seem to find an answer.

i have a 5 year old lab/jack Russell terrier mix (that is our best guess, we adopted her from the pound) and we just brought home an 8 week old Boston/jack Russell terrier hybrid and Leci (the older dog) runs from the new little puppy (Khia).

Khia loves Leci and tries playing with her, and Leci either cowers behind one of us or tries to climb up on the highest part of the couch (on which she obviously does not fit).

Leci does not get aggressive when the dog eats her food or lays on her bed, or even plays with her raw-hide bones. She just runs away.

What can I do to help Leci adapt to the new puppy?

Leci was not very well socialized at all when she was growing up. She has had a few kittens in her time and loved them, though. They used to curl up and sleep together.

It is my opinion, I think cats are better pets than dogs. They both are the cutest thing in the world and both have lost of things in common, but cats will not leave you ever! I had a cat and it died :( I was really sad about that. He was poisoned. When ever I was sad he was with me on my bed, kind of like asking me why I was sad. Now I only have 1 cat left. I hope he stays with us for a long time. But I know 100% they love us. When Nidya (the undead cat) leaves to go outside, when I call his name he comes running home. I love my cats....

Animals are sometimes smarter than people. Most adult cats and dogs will accept a baby kitten or puppy. Keep your puppy on the leash and let the cat get use to seeing the dog (while in the house.) Make sure your cat has somewhere high they can jump too like a high scratching post or table where the puppy can't bother it. Then let the puppy loose. The cat will often give the puppy a swat (no claws out) and the puppy knows enough to back off. Some cats may give a scratch or two to the puppy, but generally never dangerous. This is a good learning curve for the puppy and it won't take long before the two are getting along. I have a cat and two dogs and I had to introduce my dogs to our cat and that's how I did it and it only took 2 hours. Answer I introduced my kittens with my inlaw's little puppy (they're about same size). They first showed the sign of being nervous and such, then they also simulated swatting the dog (like slapping his cheek, sorta), then started cornering the puppy and tailing it and stalking it... But soon enough the kittens got tired because the puppy was too energetic and was running around EVERYWHERE in the house (going up and down the stairs three floors do get tiresome for them), and soon they accepted that even if they don't like the puppy, they'll live with it. Oh, and the puppy ate the kitty's food and drank out of their bowls and my kittens were such cowards, they just kept meowing and angry growling, but no show of attacks or hisses or anything like that. They just kinda came running back to me and started meowing with sad faces (that's how I found out puppy was eating their food), so I just gave them more food and they were happy again.
