Dog Behavior

Dogs are unable to talk just like we do, but we can still understand their feelings by observing their behavior and body language. It is compulsory that an owner is aware of his dog's body language, as it will not only strengthen their bond, but will also prevent tragic results where the owner is forced to abandon his dog due to behavior problems. In this category, there are questions relating to the different body languages of dogs, their behavior, etc.

If you see a pattern of this, or suspect the feces is from an infected animal (or human) contact your vet.

How do you decide if your 17-year-old dog should be put to sleep?

  • I know it hurts one's heart when they have to put down an old friend. If your dog can't walk, is not making it out to the bathroom, not eating or drinking or walking around with their tail between their legs then it sounds like time. If you are unsure take your dear pet into the vet and they will let you know. They can tell if organs are swollen or shutting down just by feeling (don't have them do extensive tests.) I know what I am about to say is going to be so hard on you, but it's important you ask the vet to give your pet a sedative and while that is taking hold you have time to say your goodbyes. Stay with your old friend through the procedure. Some dogs or cats will slink off into a corner or room and just lay quietly. All my pets did that. I found they look at you as if you have the key to their suffering and they stay there just for you. It's selfish to keep a pet alive when they are suffering. Again I stress, just to put your own mind at rest, take your pet to the vets to be absolutely sure it's your pets time. I had two dogs that lived to 20, 2 that lived to 17 and 18 and a cat that was 21. You just never know, sometimes there is something you can do for your old friend.
  • If it is in great pain then heavens yes...it will be good for dog.
  • If its just fine and healthy then no if it has a broken leg.
  • If your dog is in immense pain, taking medicine, and completely out of it all the time then he doesn't deserve to suffer anymore even if its hard on you.
  • If there is nothing wrong with your pet at all there is no point in putting it down. It should ONLY be put down if needed.

What is the healthiest thing a dog can eat?

There is no "healthiest" dog breed. Long ago, prior to the mainstream popularization of dog shows, certain "working" breeds were among the healthiest, but in modern times this no longer holds true. Almost all dog breeds have had their health compromised for show or other aesthetic reasons to some degree. The most obvious examples of this are the English Bulldog and the Americanized German Shepherd. The few exceptions that remain are generally found in poorer countries that cannot afford dog shows and because they also cannot afford specialized veterinary care for many health problems that arise, thus the dogs bred in these countries tend to be heartier by necessity or simple natural selection. For example, German Shepherds of East German descent tend to have fewer health problems than those with an American heritage due to the impoverished conditions in which they were bred.

In general though, size is the one trait that has a rather linear correlation with lifespan. The larger the dog, the shorter the lifespan and vice versa.

How frequently do dogs poop?

A male Pug dog is usually bigger and heavier. A male (Dog) Pug's average weight is around 6 to 10 kg(13-20lb)and they stand 30-36cm (12-14") high. A female (Bitch)Pug's average weight is about 6-8 kg (13-18lb)and height 25-30cm (10-12"). They can become much heavier than this if overfed.

Will your dog get dog aggressive if she is pregnant?

It all depends on the dog. If your dog is an aggressive Mastiff, Bulldog, Doberman Pinscher, or one of those "aggressive dogs", yes, they might not want to be around others. That goes for humans too! It also depends on how your dog normally acts. If they're always aggressive, then yes, they may not want to be around others. I hope this answers your question!

How many hours should your dog not eat before getting neutered?

Most vets will tell you not to put food down the night before they go in. It's about the same as a person when they go for surgery. Usually 12 hours before. Any food in your system and the anestetics could make you sick. Usually people stop feeding their dogs at around 9pm or 10pm but still allow them to drink water.

How do you stop my mauture dog from peeing on carpet?

  • I've done this many times and it has worked when other ideas didn't. It works best for puppies that you find "in the act". You gently but firmly grab them by the scruf of their neck and give them a little side to side shake while growling in a low voice. I read this somewhere how puppies instantly know what they did was wrong because that is the way their mother reacted to something they did that was wrong. Remember their mother never spanked them, yelled at them, or rubbed their nose in anything.
  • You should NOT rub your dog's nose in it's pee. It won't understand what you're doing (they surely could care less if they have to smell their own urine), especially if you didn't catch them in the act. If you don't catch them while they're going, there isn't much you can do about it. You simply have to work on prevention. Take your dog outside/to the area you want them to go to the bathroom after they wake up, after they eat, and after they play. This way they will have enough chances to go and they won't NEED to go to the bathroom on the carpet. If you DO catch them as they're going on the carpet, scold them, then relocate them to the area that you want them to go to the bathroom in as soon as possible. Be consistent, your dog will soon learn to follow a routine and accidents should happen less often (or never). You will probably need to keep doing this with a puppy or newly trained dog for a while (taking them out periodically). Don't expect them to tell you when they need to go outside to go to the bathroom, puppies won't/can't do this until about 4 or 5 months of age and training. *side note* make sure you clean up where they have gone on the carpet thoroughly. If they smell their urine somewhere they will be likely to go there again. Every pet store sells great products for cleaning up pet stains.

What do bulldogs act like?

It is best to feed bulldogs (and other breeds of dog) commercial dog food. This can be canned, dry food or other meat products. Your vet is the best one to advise you on the ideal diet for your dog.

Why do dogs lick their joints?

Sounds like arthritis. The pet is trying to tell you that something hurts. Remember, they can't speak, but I have no doubt they're cognitive enough to try to communicate to you with the only means they have possible, and that's by drawing your attention to a problem they're experiencing.

You're the smart pet owner, in that you've recognized a behavior that doesn't seem normal, which means the pet has 'reached you'. Now, it's up to you to figure out what it's really trying to say.

Why do dogs eat underwear or socks?

It's like what a wolf would do when he drags a bone away from the rest of the pack to chew on. It's his prize, and he doesn't want any other pack member to take it from him. That's sort of the same thing with dogs that like to hide your personal items like your shocks or a shoe. Unless you teach them that those are your property, he thinks that it's his and he can do whatever he wishes to them.
