Which instrumental ensemble other than an orchestra would contain a double bass?
There are a few works written for Piano Quintet with the instrumentation of Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass, the most famous being Schubert's 'Trout Quintet', also known as his Piano Quintet in A major.
There are also a few works for String Quartet with Double Bass such as Antonín Dvořák's String Quintet in G major, Op.77 and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Serenade in G major, K.525. Slightly smaller string works with the double bass include six string sonatas by Gioachino Rossini, for two violins, cello, and double bass.
Larger works that incorporate the double bass include Beethoven's Septet in E-flat major, Op.20.
Others include Serge Prokofiev's Quintet in G minor, Op.39 for Oboe, Clarinet, Violin, Viola, and Double Bass; Erwin Schulhoff's Concertino for Flute/Piccolo, Viola, and Double Bass; Fred Lerdahl's Waltzes for Violin, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass; Mohammed Fairouz's Litany for Double Bass and wind quartet; Mario Davidovsky's Festino for Guitar, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass; and Iannis Xenakis's Morsima-Amorsima for Piano, Violin, Cello, and Double bass.
What orchestra a group is the double bass in?
Not usually. Traditionally, string quartets are composed of two violins, a viola, and a cello. However, there are some compositions that require a double bass in replacement for one of those instruments.
Would it be better to buy a double bass or a double bass pedal?
Both of them will get you to a similar point: being able to play bass drums with both feet. Advantages of a double bass pedal over two bass drums: lower cost, one less bass drum to move, one less drum to tune, and it keeps your kit smaller--very important if you play in bars with small stages. Two bass drums? They sound better--you can position the beaters for each drum so they play the sweet spots on the drums. You can mount four rack toms instead of just two. Two bass drums make the instrument look more imposing. And I've always wanted to try using two different-sized bass drums, so I could play bass lines with two different tones. That would sound cool. I've seen people build a double bass kit out of a standard kit and a fusion kit, which has smaller toms than does the standard kit. This also gives you a second snare, which you need onstage just in case you break your snare drum during a set.
There are 2 meanings of 'diwdiw': The first is as a Welsh expression of amazement or astonishment; 'Diw' in Welsh means 'God', so it literally translates as 'God, God!' It's a common phrase used in the Welsh language to express surprise, shock or bafflement. The second meaning is as an Indonesian person's name, that can be used for both sexes, but mainly for girls.
Was Domenico Dragonetti the inventor of the double Bass?
Domenico Dragonetti did not invent the instrument per se, but I am reasonably sure he was responsible for some improvements. What he is really responsible for is showing composers what the instrument in competent hands is capable of. In the early 1800's he became a friend of Beethoven who when he heard D.D. play, became inspired to be much more creative when writing his bass parts. I believe aside from some absolutely beautiful music we wrote and played himself he showed that the bass is capable of playing some extremely complex music and got us all out of the essentially root-5th stuff that was typical before then. He really raised the bar for al of us. As far as the music he wrote for the instrument as a solo instrument, in my opinion, I have yet to hear anything that really compares with it. If I were to stumble across a time machine one of the first things on my list would be to attend a concert where he was the featured soloist so I could hear what the music he wrote was really intended to sound like. From what I've read, he was the Jaco Pastorius of the Upright Bass except that his life story has a happy ending.

Can a cello play lower than a double bass?
No. A double-bass is normally tuned to E A D G (same as a bass guitar, or an octave below the bottom four strings of a guitar) while a cello is tuned to C G D A, an octave below a viola, starting at a pitch two semitones below than the double-bass' D string. In fact some orchestral double-basses go even lower than E - to the lowest C on a piano - via a mechanical extension, or to low B via a fifth string. The cello was originally the bass member of the violin (or more correctly viola) family, and the double-bass (originally a member of the viol family) was so-called because it was pitched even lower. There is in fact now a "missing member" of the violin family - a "tenor violin" pitched an octave below the violin - which was in use until the mid-18th century. "Cello" is short for "violoncello", Italian for "fiddle-big-little" ("viol[a]" + "-on[e]" + "-cello") in other words a small bass fiddle, while a double-bass is called "violone" ("fiddle-big") or "contrabasso".

I have a 20 guage double with the "Utica" and "London Fluid Steel markings. It also gas a Simmons Hardware grip plate. I found parts listed at numrich gun parts (www.gunpartscorp.com) and I also found some info in a Gun Traders book. The gun traders book says it was made by savage in Utica, Ny. There was a few more details but my book is loaned out at this time so I can't give all the info. The ordering information from Numrich indicates it is similar to or the same as the FoxBDE,(made by savage) Savage 540DL. If you will send your address I will give you the other information when my traders book is returned. Hope this is informative. gbigbopper1@wmconnect.com

Why is the double bass drumming difficult?
Taking into account that drumming is a pretty physical thing - it's no wonder that playing with both of your feet will be tricky or even hard at times. But overall the problems within playng double pedals or two bass drums lay in two big issues - lack of proper technique and poor settings of gear(note that not pedals only:seat height, basshead tension etc.)
