The very best light for drawing or painting is light from a North facing window. If you are lucky enough to have such a window you can work in front of, your easel should sit at a 45 degree angle from the window, in such a manner that your body does not cast a shadow on your work.

That means if you are right handed the window is off your left shoulder. If you are left handed then the window is off your right shoulder.

If you do not have access to North light, then a very good light, attached over your work with a natural light bulb in it will do almost as well. Make sure it washes down across the work surface in such a manner it does not cause too much glare on the work, cast shadows or shine in your eyes

Yes...but you can be trained to do this. 99% of all people do not actually see what they are looking at. For instance...really look at your hand. Yes you know what your hand looks like...but how many lines are under your little finger? Are your veins showing through your skin? Do you have calluses on your finger tips? See? You never noticed what you see. The same thing applies in drawing. You must study what you are looking at. For a beginning drawing exercise, get a spoon and a bowl out of the cupboard and lay them on the table. Now draw them. First, you will have to draw circle, and with exact measuring then draw a hexagon. Then make it a cube, and on the top side of this square divide each side by a dot and connect these dots with straight lines. Next, draw a circle in this new, smaller square.
