How long does it take an fowl to hatch an egg?

Hens begin laying at 18 ? 20 weeks of age and a healthy chicken will lay about one egg a day. A hen does not need a rooster to lay eggs and eggs are produced in response to day light patterns. The eggs we buy in the store are not fertilized (they don?t hatch). The size of the egg is dependant on the age of the hen. Older birds lay larger eggs."

Does it have to be warm for the butterfly egg to hatch?

Yes, they do have to be kept warm, but not necessarily by a sitting mother. A nesting goose or duck will get up at least once a day to leave the nest for a swim, get something to eat or just a stretch. The time she spends away from the nest is not long and usually she covers the eggs with a layer of down to keep them warm.

In the case of Canada Geese, when the mother does leave the nest for a break, the father is often close by standing guard to stop any prediators from attacking the nest.

How do you build a duck pond?

Buy a plastic baby pool and put it in the ground.

Well, first of all, are you talking about a pond/pool for your pet ducks or something to attract local wildlife?

Many people do use the small plastic kiddie pools for pet ducks, however these are hard to clean, and it's not recommended that they be put into the ground. This will usually cause them to break as they are not made to take the weight of the ground pushing in on the sides.

You can make a nice above ground pool for pet ducks by buying a 50 gallon Rubbermaid Stock Tank / Trough ($70 at TSC or check you local Craigslist). These are Heavy Duty and You can add a simple drain if one is not already installed to make cleanups easier.

You'll need a few (6-8) of the small type cinder blocks (or retaining wall blocks, or something similar that you may have on hand etc etc) to create steps so that water access is easier and safer for the ducks.

NOTE: If you do not have level land to place it on, you can easily make a base for it using some sand.

First use the cinder blocks to build the steps where you want them, then use more cinder blocks (or again other bricks/rocks that are available) to build a wall out from the steps to form an oval a little larger than the Stock Tank (the height of the wall depends on the slope of your ground, but probably somewhere between 8"-12" high).

Then fill 1/3 with gravel (optional) and fill the rest with sand, do not fill completely to the top of the wall, but leave a couple of inches.

Level the sand by smoothing it out with a hoe or other tool (even a gloved hand works).

Place your stock tank on the sand and fill with water. If you notice that it is not filling evenly, then empty it and level the sand again accordingly, repeat until the tank fills evenly.

You may need to add some sand again from time to time to keep it level, as over time the sand will slowly wash away.

Just like their wild counterparts, pet ducks love minnows and tadpoles, they provide them with excellent nutrition and even some entertainment, so you may want to add some to their pool on occasion.
