Can a person with epilepsy live a normal life?

Many people with epilepsy live very normal lives. Epilepsy only affects them when they have a seizure and there can be days, weeks, months or even years between seizures. So most of the time, they are fine. Some people have very regular and severe seizures, so their lives would be more affected. So it depends on how often people have their seizures and how bad those seizures are as to what way it will affect their lives. Are people able to hold a valid Saskatchewan driver's license if they experience epileptic seizures?

They are not suposed to even think of applying for a learners licence, leave alone a valid drivers licence. As they put their lives and of others at risk doing this. Better Answer (The above answer is wrong): Usually yes and rarely no. There are modern medicines and surgical procedures which are effective in controlling epileptic seizures. The Canadian Medical Association has developed criteria for determining when a particular epileptic will be licensed to drive. If a person refuses to take their prescribed anti-seizure medicine then they will not be allowed to drive. If they take the medicine and have been seizure-free for three months (longer for commercial drivers) then they can get a valid license to drive. There are specific detailed explanations in Section 10.4 (Seizures) of the CMA Driver's Guide, available as a download from the SGI website. See reference link provided.

What cant you do with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy?

Being someone with JME, I can answer this. You can do almost everything an average, non-epileptic person can do. Things you should never do with JME include but are not limited to:

  • If you are photosensitive, interacting with strobe lights (i.e. looking at them, turning them on, ect)
  • You shouldn't drive if you've just recently had a seizure. Most states have a law about how long, so if varies for how long
  • You should not drink a lot of alcohol. Alcohol is a huge trigger for seizures, along with being overtired and stressed
  • Sometimes, sudden noises that are very loud or put me into shock are dangerous; i've never had a seizure from one but they could be a trigger.
  • Avoid any amusement park rides that have an epilepsy warning.
  • If you are currently in school or work at a school, make an arrangement with the guidance councilor and or nurse to have permission to get outside ahead of time. Fire alarms often have strobes and loud noises, so they can very easily cause a seizure.
  • If you see an ambulance, fire truck, or police car, look away. They can trigger seizures easily from the big flashing lights.
  • Try to use the buddy system as often as possible. Never swim alone, drive alone, or shower with no one else in the house. If you have a seizure whilst doing one of those things alone, you could very easily get injured or die.
  • Before playing a video game, going to a party, seeing a movie/play, or anything of that sort, confirm that there are no strobe lights.
  • You should probably get a blue tooth for your phone or use speaker as much as you can because the brain waves can actually be messed up by putting the phone directly towards your ear.

I hope this helps!

28 year old grandson just started having seizures and was diagnosed with grand mal epilepsy. Is there holistic treatment?

As a former epileptic, I can speak from experience when I tell you to PLEASE speak to your neurologist regarding treatments. Anti-seizure medications have advanced greatly in the past few years and left untreated epilepsy can be extremely dangerous. There are various websites that recommend herbal treatments, acupuncture, and even aromatherapy for the treatment of epilepsy. Please be careful!

What are the withdrawal symptoms of Epival?

If the withdrawal is sudden, and the patient is epileptic and Epival is the only medication used to control the epilepsy, then seizures would certainly re-occur. If the patient is taking Epival for mania and no other mood stablizer is substituted, and the patient is also taking an anti-depressant, mood cycling may occur. If the withdrawal is gradual, no side-effects from it are to be expected, if a substitute medicine is used for the condition of the patient. In case the medication is no longer needed, therefore, the best way to remove Epival is gradually, although some persons have anyway reported symptoms such as tremor, headache, abdominal pain, and hair loss, even upon gradual withdrawal. But these symptoms are related more to Epival use, short-term and long-term.

Can a natural gap in your front teeth cause brain damage if removed if there is a piece of skin there?

Of course it can't. My sister-in-law just had her front teeth done and gaps filled in and some teeth pulled and others capped. The only way you could damage the brain is to shove the tip of the nose hard so the bone goes into the brain. Your teeth have nothing to do with this.
