Is a mendini baritone a good brand?

A Mendini by Cecilio baritone or euphonium is a good student instrument. Meaning it is a good instrument if you are just looking for one to play in a middle or high school band and do not plan on playing it in college. You can get a Cecilio euphonium for as little as $340 brand new so they would be very good for someone that is planning on playing in school but not professionally. If you are planing on being a professional or going to play in college you probably want to wait and buy a really good compensating euphonium with a brand name like Besson; but they will cost around $6,000 - $7,000 brand new and around $3,000 for one that a couple years old.

How do you convert music for Baritone TC to Baritone BC?

There is a serious of steps that you have to follow to convert music from Baritone TC music to Baritone BC music.

For example: On Baritone BC the major Bb scale is Bb C D Eb F G A Bb. Well on Baritone TC the notes are C D E F G A B C because a C on Treble music for Baritone is going to be the same for a Bb on bass clef music for Baritone. So you finger a C open and that's also how you finger a Bb. So basically your playing the same note.

It would probably help to know the notes on treble clef so you'll be able to convert them and also figure out the major scale fingerings and notes for Baritone TC and BC so it would be easier to convert the notes. Also it would help to print out a fingering charts. This website should help http://www2.milwaukee.k12.wi.us/lcmsa/Music_Theater/Band/Fingering_Charts.htm

and basically that's it. It's a lot of work but I wish you luck.

If you have any problems just tell me and I would be delited to help.

Compensating euphoniums are for professionals or euphonium players that are really dedicated to playing. Why do you make a growling noise on the Euphonium in the middle register?

There could be any number of reasons to use flutter tongue (growling noise effect) on the Euphonium. In all honesty, it depends on the composer and the situation. In jazz-type songs, like George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, it's mostly used as decoration. In some classical songs, like Frank Tichelli's Angels in the Architecture, it's used to build tension and angst. Most of the time, though, Trombonists are the ones who are asked to use flutter tongue. The mellow sound of the Euphonium doesn't generally suit itself for the biting, growling tone of the flutter tongue.

Within a British-style Brass Band, the Euphonium, unsurprisingly, is in the 'Euphonium section', otherwise known as "Euphs and Bari's" since the Euphoniums up are grouped with the Baritones (Bb Baritone Saxhorns).

More conventional instrumental grouping would place the Euphonium in the same family as Tubas (Eb + Bb Bass Tubas) whilst placing the Baritones along with the Eb Tenor (Sax)horns and the Flugel horn.
