What tasks are required on for FBI?
It really doesn't matter, unless you're looking to be in one of the scientific fields (e.g., forensics, behavioral science, art, ballistics, forgery, etc.). The primary requirement is that you have a minimum 4 year college degree, and can pass the FBI's stringent application, polygraph, and background investigation. Most applicants don't make it through the polygraph, as the failure rate is extremely high.
Once you're in though, the sky's the limit. You can learn pretty much anything you want, and the FBI has many post-grad degree programs that they'll pay for.
For Special Agents, prior military or law enforcement experience/skill is helpful, but not required.

Both were actually unauthorized issues but were struck at the Mint, so they have level of legitimacy not found in many other "under the table" issues. (In fact, the 1804 dollars weren't even struck in 1804!). To the best of everyone's knowledge, all specimens have been accounted for. Recent auctions have been in the $1 million to $1.5 million range.

The FBI without a doubt. NSA do not leave their computers and work on OCONUS matters. Marshals seek fugitives but mainly stand in court and talk about the latest episode of "man hunters" because only a small number look for fugitives. FBI works gangs, drugs, violent crime (bank robbery; murder for hire; fugitives; kidnaping; etc), plus is responsible for counter terrorism, domestic terrorism, public corruption, and much much more despite what "haters" (people that did not get in FBI) say, no other agency in the US compares to the FBI and their jurisdiction.

You need a bachelor's degree and preferably a master's degree, preferably in a subject area that the FBI prizes. These would be public accounting, chemistry, biology, forensics, etc. One or more foreign languages will help. An absolutely clear record going back to your juvenile days helps. Making sure that no one can say that you have abused drugs or alcohol or are in any way not to be trusted is essential. Making certain you are completely correct in your work and educational history is essential. Staying clear of large debts. Not gambling. Not associating with gangs or criminal associations. The FBI wants you to be clean, trustworthy, intelligent, honest, reliable, and accurate in all things. An FBI special agent is always on duty and that means they are trusting you to be a person who never slips up.

Is the FBI Terrorist Watch List no different than McCarthyism of the early 1950s?
The primary difference with McCarthyism was that individuals were publicly singled out, by name, and brought before a Congressional Committee formed by J. Edgar Hoover in the 1950s and were accused of being Communist or Communist sympathizers.
In today's FBI Terrorist Watch List, individuals are singled out, but not publicly. They do not need to appear before any US government body to prove their innocence. They are not accused of anything but are deemed higher risk individuals.
Your point, however, about the similarities between these beliefs (communists vs terrorists) within the US government is appropriate. Neither needed/need much basis for being suspected, and some type of profiling seems to be used then and now. Fear drives both, seemingly.
