What should you do if you find someone with a piece of glass sticking out of their arm?
First, call the emergency services (ambulance and medics).
First Aid
Do not try to remove the piece of glass. If the patient is standing, get the person to sit or lay down. Wrap a towel around the glass shard to keep it from moving, but do not move the glass or it could cut nerves or blood vessels.
If there is a lot of bleeding or shooting blood, apply pressure above the wound and raise the arm above the level of the heart. You may need to hold the arm up, or put a pillow or thick blanket under the arm and hand so the whole limb is supported and elevated. If the trauma is to the back of the arm, have the patient lie on his side and you'll have to hold the arm up in the air.
Keep the patient calm.
*If the injured person is a child, you may need an adult to hold the child in their arms and still raise the injured arm above the level of the child's heart.
* Do not give anything by mouth to the person, even water, just in case the person needs surgery; surgery is best done when a patient has an empty stomach to avoid vomiting and aspiration of vomitus into the lungs.

Does everyone have an allergic reaction to brown recluse spider bites?
No, not everyone has an allergic reaction to the bite of the brown recluse spider. In fact most people don't have an allergic reaction. But people do react to the venom the spider injects. It's powerfully toxic and can pose a deadly threat in young children or the older or infirm. Certainly if someone has an allergic reaction to the venom in addition to the effects of the toxins, this will complicate medical treatment and make the bite a much more serious threat to life.

How does humidity impair the ability to thermoregulate?
Sweating is one of the main ways the body cools off. It works by taking advantage of the process of evaporation. When the skin sweats, it makes a large surface area slightly wet. Then the sweat evaporates, cooling the skin, which in turn cools the blood circulating in the blood vessels that supply the skin. This ultimately cools the body. But why does the evaporation of water on the skin cool the skin down? Excellent question. The reason it causes the skin to cool down is because the transition of water from its liquid state to its gas state (water vapor) is an "endothermic" reaction. That means that energy is sort of absorbed in that process. In this case, the "energy" is heat. So when all that water suddenly becomes vaporized, it cools down the surface of the skin. Which brings us to how humidity messes this up. The transition of water from liquid to gas is governed by a principle called the Law of Partial Pressures. This Law, simply stated, just says that if there is a lot of something in the air already, there is less room for more of it. Let me restate. On a humid day, there is a lot of water vapor dissolved in the air already. This makes it more difficult for more water vapor to get into the atmosphere. The atmosphere is already "crowded" with water vapor. On a very dry day, in contrast, there is tons of room in the dry air for water vapor to dissolve into. In the desert, where the air is very dry, you may lose a lot more water through evaporation of sweat than you would in New Orleans, where the air is thick with moisture. The partial pressure of water vapor in desert air is low, facilitating evaporation, and subsequently, cooling of the body through sweating. The partial pressure of water vapor in tropical air is high, making evaporation more difficult, and subsequently, decreasing the effectiveness of evaporation as a cooling mechanism for the body.
What is a medical alert system?
A medical alert system basically calls an ambulance or paramedics if you have fallen and cannot get up. It is particularly useful for elderly people who live alone.
A medical alert system provides help at the push of a button. The way it works is:
1. User pushes a waterproof button.
2. Activates a 2-way voice console allowing the user to talk to a monitoring center.
3. Monitoring center assesses the situation and contacts EMS and/or friends, family and neighbors to help the user.

What do you do if you step on a sharp rock?
If the rock has broken the skin, first clean it off with water and then apply an antiseptic. If it is bleeding excessively, elevate your foot and put pressure on the wound. Cover the wound with sterile gauze until it has scabbed over. Cuts on the bottom of the foot are slow to heal since few people can stay off the injured area.
If your foot has been punctured or the cut is very deep, seek immediate professional help. These kinds of wounds can bleed a lot and are prone to infection. Swelling can also be an indication of infection.
Should there be much pain after getting stitches in your palm?
There will be some. But "much" pain? Pain is relative to injury and the tolerance of an individual for that pain. And in a situation where sutures are used to close a wound, the sutures themselves are a source of some pain. A physician is the best person qualified to assist in the control of this kind of pain, and if it is simply "too much" pain, a consult should be obtained ASAP and something given (prescribed) for it. But you can expect some moderate discomfort (pain) after something like is described. If you can hang in there, use some over the counter (OTC) medication to dull the hurt. Consult your pharmacist for OTC meds, because they are able to offer suggestions and are marvelously equipped to point out a specific product you could use. As for dosage, ask for directions or consult those on the package, and operate by those guidelines.

What are the three precautions against body fluids you would take during treatment of a casualty?
The term "universal precautions" is used to describe how to prevent contamination when dealing with potential pathogens. Basically, treat every body substance as if it is trying to kill you. Use BSI/PPE (body substance isolation / Personal protective equipment) such as gloves, goggles, gown, splash shield, etc. to prevent contamination. Proper hand washing is also vitally important. If it's wet, warm and not yours, don't touch it.
No. News papers are not sterile, but hey when you are in a pinch, use what you have got available. So long as you are not dealing with an open fracture it should be ok. If you do have and open fracture you will need to dress the open wound first if it's bleeding badly. That should afford you enough protection to apply your news print splint.
