first and foremost, keep in mind that fish breathe in oxygen, just like we do, they just get oxygen from the water. a lot of other liquids aren't very oxygenated. a fish trying to breathe in milk or soda would be like us trying to breathe car exhaust.
also, fish greatly prefer a pH that isn't very far away from neutral. many other liquids are either too acidic or too basic for them.
