What is the average cost per square foot for carpet?

WikiAnswers Responses:

There is no one price, & no one quality, could be junk for about a buck or premium stuff for $6-10 or more a foot. Here's a good rule of thumb, assuming you shop for value and don't over pay.

Expect 5 years of good service for every $1 you spend on carpet, (not pad or labor) per foot.

$1 buck/ sq /ft= 5 years of good service

$2 buck Sq/ Ft= 10 years & so on..

So much depends on the quality of the carpet. The price can vary from a pound or less per sq ft to many pounds, even dozens of pounds.

How much a foot for carpet

Mark Twain said that "One foot on fire & one foot on ice & on AVERAGE your pretty comfortable" I share his view that average is a pretty illusionary tool when it comes to being really useful.

Most stores offer free estimates so what does that cost you to have someone put an actual product with an actual quote.. you can always say no thanks.

$20 per yard = 2.22 per sq foot.

Can you install tile over wood?

Yes, but I wouldn't recommend it. You will regret it later. Tile needs a cement base to adhere to. A wooden base is not good for ceramic tiles. I have seen tile floors where people have tiled over the wood. The tiles are loose, cracked and unlevel. The grout is coming out and water seeps through the floor.

How do you locate the floor cross-board-joists in an older mobile home so as to install screws to fix a wood floor squeak?

Obtain a stud finder that uses sonar to locate these. Available at most major hardware stores - they work great for hanging heavy objects on a wall in the home, too.

Is concrete flooring good?

Well, that depends on many things like: Location - concrete is cold, so where are you? Use - what is it going to be used for? Finish - What kind of finish do you desire? Age - How old is the concrete? Cost - How much do you intend or plan on spending? Maintenance - which will depend on the type of material you use on your concrete floor. Certainly, if this concrete flooring is in your living space, you don't want to leave it bare. I've done some wonderful work with Acid Staining, where there's no limit to design. You can cut groves in the concrete to make it look like tile, and stain it to look like marble. Remember, though, that concrete flooring is colder than tile, wood, etc. You'll want to inspect your concrete for cracks, stains, solidity, and moisture. Prior to staining your concrete, you'll need to wash is really good, with acid, then neutralize it to remove ALL of the acid. So, to answer your question without getting too far off with something that you may not even be considering...yes, concrete flooring can be good, even beautiful, and livable. I've done concrete flooring in million dollar houses, as well as commercial jobs. I've done it more in commercial buildings than residential homes. I've only done 2 residential homes with acid stained concrete in the last year.

Do you need to seal your travertine tile floor?

YES
natural stone is porous and will stain unless it is properly sealed Aside from staining, not sealing any natural stone tile can lead to mold and mildew growth, and the porous surface will attract moisture. There are cleaners to help with stains and moisture problems, but they do require work and patience. Also, make sure you clean your tiles thoroughly before sealing!!! If not, you are sealing in dirt, fingerprints, smudges, possibly moisture, etc... Let the tiles dry out for a day or so: otherwise you are sealing in moisture. I usually recommend waiting 1 week after the tile has been installed and grouted before scrubing and sealing.

Can you install solid wood floors on concrete?

Not a good idea because of the moisture that occurs in the concrete.

What is the best cleaner for hardwood floors?

PLain water, mop or rag wrung nearly dry. Murphy's is bad for hardwood. Some people use "Old English" in matching color to take care of scratches, but should be plain water or very, very mild detergent.

If the wood is not sealed: then do not use water alone as it will damage the wood.

To get rid of grease and dirt and help to preserve your floor, The Reader's Digest suggests:

4½ cups liquid paraffin

1½ cups of glycerine

¼ cup household ammonia

¾ cup turpentine

Combine the ingredients in a wide mouthed jar.

Store away from heat, away from children.

To use:

Add 1 cup of cleaner to 2 litres of warm water in a bucket and with it sponge-mop the floor. Can rinse afterwards if you want.

How do you clean laminate wood floors?

Laminate floors are made with recyled hardwood, so you should treat them like hardwood floors. Any regular hardwood cleaning product should work. In particular, Bona is a great product, but there are many others.

For both laminate and hardwood, I would avoid products with oil or wax in the name or that promote a shiny finish. These products have wax which will wear down the finish and damage your floors in the long run.

Is Shaw laminate flooring a good product?

Yes. Shaw is one of the largest manufacturers of flooring in the world. They have wonderful products an excellent selection and a great warranty.

How do you decide the starting point to install laminate flooring?

I start on the side that would be hardest to finish on. If the room has baseboard heat I start under it. If not I will start on the door side so I can slide it under the door frame. If neither side has a door or heat, I start on the longest side.

As for direction, go with whatever looks best. **Note - Most professional installers will tell you to lay the boards perpendicular to the main source of light regardless of the room dimensions. (Stand facing the largest natural light source, i.e. the room's largest window, and lay the flooring down so that the short end of the plank is facing the window.)
