Why is hard disk is popular than floppy disk?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hard disk is more popular than floppy disk because hard disk can store huge amount of data in term of mega byte to giga byte. It stores the data safely compared to floppy disk. External hard disk are portable so they can transfer the data from one computer to another . But floppy disk has low capacity and are vey slow compared to hard disk . It can be easily damaged when exposed to heat and dust. Files can be easily corrupted and data transfer rate is slow compared to hard disk. Nowadays, computer are built without floppy drives which is needed to read floppy disks.

What are other drives are there besides floppydisk?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Computer drives can include:

  • An internal hard drive
  • Sometimes, a "slave" drive which is a second internal drive or a partition on the primary hard drive

External Drives consist of:

  • floppy disk drive
  • CD drive
  • DVD drive (the CD/DVD are usually one drive)
  • External Desk Drive - a unit that connects by USB Cable to the computer and acts as a secondary drive; often used for storage.
  • A "thumb" or stick drive - inserts into a USB port and used for storage.

How do you turn off write protect on a pen drive?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There may be a switch on the side of it which you can change to turn write-protect on or off. If not then read the manual that came with it or check the manufacturer's website

is this going to add?

To disable writing access to USB drives and make all USB drives has only read-only access, follow these steps:

  1. Run Registry Editor (regedit).
  2. Navigate to the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control

  3. Create a New Key named as StorageDevicePolicies.
  4. Highlight StorageDevicePolicies, and then create a New DWORD (32-bit) Value named as WriteProtect.
  5. Double click on WriteProtect, and set its value data to 1.

Some operating system has already have this StorageDevicePolicies in their system.

To revert and remove the blocked write access to USB drivers, just delete the StorageDevicePolicies registry key, or delete the WriteProtect registry entry, or change the value data for WriteProtect to 0.

How much do a floppy disk drive cost?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Floppy disks are seldom sold individually. Depending on the bulk number you purchase, the price per floppy is generally $0.75 to $1.00 USD.

Is a floppy disk external?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No. An internal floppy drive is connected into the motherboard. It cannot be disconnected from the mother board and function as an external device. However you can buy the external floppy drive and then plug it into a USB port on your computer.

If you want to have a floppy drive work externally, you need to buy one that is designed to work with USB connection to your computer.

If the actual size of a floppy disk is 1.47 MB then why does the floppy disk only show 1.44 MB of space?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Floppy disk is 1.47 MB but shows 1.44 MB of space... This is due to an inconsistency with measurement standards; specifically that of decimal (base 10) versus binary (base 2). 1,440 kB is actually ~1.47 MB because there are 1,024 bytes in a kB; 1,440 kB x 1024 1,474,560 bytes ~1.47 MB.

Sidenote:

One might think that the 1.47 MB is indeed the "raw" capacity as opposed to the "formatted" capacity. And, that the formatting itself requires 0.03MB which is used on Windows for the File Allocation Table or FAT.

But...

An unformatted 3½" floppy drive is actually 2.0 MB, so the 1.44-1.47 discrepancy has nothing to do with formatting overhead.

What is twisted cable?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They are twisted just to avoid as mush electrical and magnetic interference between them, which is created when the current flows through them.

Answer

Conductors within cables are twisted in order to allow the cable to be flexible.

Can CD-r drive be used as a floppy drive?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Data can be copied to CDs (Compact Discs) which are writable/rewritable and need a CD/DVD burner to write data. The difference between a floppy and CD is that floppy is a magnetics media and CD an optical media (read/write happens with help of a laser light).

To store small documents or DOS (Disk operating system) programs

Are optical disk disks are random access storage devices?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

floppy disks are read/write storage devices, they are a backing store, a non-volatile long term storage which will not lose data when power is lost.

Random access storage is the original term for RAM, the random access memory term was used a a marketing term and has stuck since.

Another Answer

YES - floppy disk are Random Access storage devices.

In what kind of machine is a floppy disk used?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The floppy disk, both the original 8 inch size and the later 5 1/4 inch size were used in all sorts of relatively early computer equipment.

  • To distribute and load firmware in a model of the IBM System/360 mainframe.
  • For software distribution as well as backup/restore media for the IBM System/38 and various other model midrange computer equipment.
  • For software distribution and data storage on a Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) PDP-11 system.
  • For data storage and various word processing machines.
  • As system devices and data storage for the original IBM Personal Computer and other similar personal computers.

Its use was replaced by the 3 1/2 inch diskette when it became available.

The pie-shaped sections are called sectors.

Groups of sectors make up a cluster.

Type of storage devices are used in hospitals?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I think for anyone to answer this question without sarcasm, you'll need to be more specific as to the details of your question (What's being stored? For what purpose/use? How much (MB/GB/TB)? Why is this question Hospital Specific (radiation, sterility, sanitation/vector control, EMI/RFI interference, etc)?

How would I connect an internal 3.5 Floppy disk drive to a motherboard that doesn't have a ribbon cable connector?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Use an external USB floppy drive.

If you MUST have internal.... if you're good and creative you -might- be able to disassemble an external USB floppy drive and mount it like an internal drive.

Alternatively, you could hunt down an old LS-120 "superdisk" drive. Its an IDE drive (40 pin connector, like your hdd or cdrom) that reads floppies (in addition to high-capacity proprietary disks)

Why the cable of floppy is twisted on one end?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

a floppy ribbon cable

that tricks the computer into using the drive as A:. This is done with the use of a

special twist in the cable that electrically changes the DS configuration of the drive

after the twist. This twist, then, causes the controller to think the drive configured as

B: is really configured as A:. For this reason, during installation of a floppy drive,

always make sure your Drive A: is located AFTER the twist on the floppy ribbon cable. If

you are trying to use a non-standard floppy cable without a twist, you'll have to change

the DS jumper to DS1, or the Drive A: setting.

Why was the floppy disk invented?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Because they are actually floppy disks of magnetic film. They don't seem floppy when you handle them because they're housed in a rigid plastic case that lets you slide them into your computer.

That is if you still have a floppy drive on your computer.

You need 10 duplicates of one floppy this describe how to do this using two different method?

How does a computer find data stored on disk?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It uses tracks and sectors to find certain pin points on where the data is. Some of the spots are reserved for certain files.

What are the error codes of floppy drive?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It means a bad spot was detected on the floppy when your computer tried to write or read data from the disk. Most of the time, the drive head that reads the data has become dirty, but sometimes there is physical damage. Rotate the disk in the sleeve. If you see scratches, dents, or folds on the surface, the disk is no good.

There is a floppy disk cleaning kit that can be used to clean the head. They have a white fibre disk in the floppy, instead of the plastic disk with brown magnetic coating.

To use a cleaning kit. Put a squirt of the head cleaning solution in the slot on the cleaning disk, insert it, and access the disk a couple of times (i.e. use the DIR command at the dos prompt). If you have no head cleaning solution, use rubbing alcohol. Don't saturate the disk, just make a wet spot. The disk will wipe the head wet/dry as it rotates.

It is possible to mark bad sectors and do data recovery on a floppy if necessary, but it requires an old copy of the Norton Utilities and some know how to do it.

Good luck.
