What is the difference between the flute and the concert flute?
As a flute is a non-transposing instrument, you don't need to worry too much about 'concert pitch'.
If you think of the piano being the decider of pitch. If you play a Bb on a non-transposing instrument, it will sound the same as a piano Bb, however on a transposing instrument, for example a clarinet, it would sound like a piano's Ab.
If someone says 'play a Bb concert scale' it means play a Bb scale at 'concert pitch' (i.e. the pitch of a piano). This would mean a clarinet would play a C scale and it would sound like a concert Bb scale because it is a transposing instrument.
For a flute, a 'Bb concert scale' would just be a Bb scale (i.e. Bb, C, D, Eb, F, G, A)
A 'B concert scale' would just be a B scale (i.e. B, C#, D#, E, F#, G#, A#)

Compare the flute and the calrinet?
A flute is a long, silver instrument that is held parallel to the ground. A clarinet is black and is held with the bottom pointing to the ground. A clarinet can be wood, or a good quality of plastic. It is a very fun instrument to play it sounds pretty. It has more of an wood type of sound. No matter what it is made out of, it sounds like it is made or wood. A flute is metal. It sounds more airy but still sounds pretty. IT is also very fun to play. If you are the type that wants something really girly so people will think that you chose the best instrument, even though they don't know the difference, i would choose the flute. If you don't care what people think of you and you want to choose what if more fun and sounds the best, i would choose the clarinet.
I didn't really give you the best answer, but I am not sure what you really need.
Well, if you need this for research/an essay etc.. then go to Wkiipedia or an encyclopedia hard text even and look up both. I have polayed both: I play the flute now. Both are similar as they are woodwinds but the clarinet uses a reed
to assist the vibration of the air flow in the moutpiece whereas the flute uses
the air flow alone. The flute is definitely harder to learn to the level of comfortable enjoyment--the embouchure, your mouth/lips and air flow coupled
with the lip plate and fitting/hdad piece of the flute are crucial and sensitive and
always an issue at any level of play. Hope I helped if only a tad..be sure to play something--whether it is a clarinet or a flute--all great stuff!
Why do you think flute is easy to play?
Trust me, the flute isn't very easy to learn. I've been playing for over three years now and I can easily play a hard song, but when I first started, I could barely get a note out. The flute can be easy if you practice enough and stay devoted to it. That's what I did. For others, it isn't as easy.
Well, I guess I think the flute is somewhat easy because the fingerings aren't very difficult. The hard part is getting a good tone. Just practice and you'll be great at playing the flute in no time.
Because girls are way too easy and early. You can't stop the players, nor can you stop other girls from being easy. But if you want a guy committed to you alone, date without sex. Tell him up front you want to be friends first and if he can't handle that, say goodbye. Do not let a guy guilt you into having sex. You control your life. You pick your friends. You be the boss of your life.

How hard is it to Excel at playing the flute?
If you practice a lot, it's really not that hard to excel in flute playing. You just need to keep practicing. If you don't practice then you will never get better. I have been playing flute for almost 3 years now and my best advice is to get a private teacher. That's what I would do cause my teacher has really helped me come a long way for only playing for two years.

Does anyone have an opinion about E L Deford Flutes?
I think they are one of the finest student flutes you could have at any price. Durable, good looking, nicely made with many features on top end flutes and incredible sound (high silver content). E.L. DeFord put much effort into his passion. The older ones from the 1970's are getting harder to come by. I still have the one I made first chair in junior high from 1975. It took me through concert and marching band (even sub zero temps). My daughter plays it now (it's had new pads) and she has first chair. Not bad for an investment of $150 bucks back then (amoritize the cost, if you like)! If you can find one, even in need of repair, get it ( fix it, if necessary)
What grabbed my interest even more was the fact that Emerson Deford himself, last year personally donated a handmade flute to a young high school fellow who waa going into serious competition in Illinois somewhere and was too poor to possess an instrument tht corresponded with his amazing talent. What a
moving bit of heartfelt devotion to music on the part of Mr. Deford.
It needs an overhaul but still plays capably well with the foot joint from my other flute for now(serious spring pproblem tto--but all fixable). Once I cleaned it up and gradually remoistened and played up the pads it has a great sound particular to Defords I believe, good smooth action with no clicks or clunks after all these years too.
Thanks for your input. I love my 10B thinwall Deford. It's from around 1975 and still plays beautifully. All silver too, keys and all. Projects great volume and looks great too.
