What is meant by 'predator-prey cycle'?

When the predator eats its prey, the prey population will go down because they're being eaten. Now there's is not enough prey because it has been eaten, there's nothing for the predator to eat. So, some die from startvation. Then the prey population increases because they are not being eaten, since the predators died of starvation. - Alexis (future vet!)

Compare energy transfer in a food chain to engery transfer in a food web?

Food "chains" have sort of become obsolete. When I first learned about them I was in elementary school and by the time I got to high school they had stopped studying food chains and moved on to food webs. I was first taught about food chains using a "field" environment. The sun makes the grass grow, the grass gets eaten by a grasshopper, the grasshopper gets eaten by a mouse, the mouse gets eaten by a hawk. But now they teach about food webs. The sun makes the grass grow, the grass could be eaten by a grasshopper or something else, then the grasshopper gets eaten by a rat, mouse, or maybe it becomes your kittens new play toy, the rat or mouse could be eaten by a hawk or any other type of bird that eats those kind of critters. It's all connected now unlike it just being a straight line like it was when I was in elementary school.

How an energy pyramid and a food chain are the same and different?

A food chain shows food energy moving from organism to organism. A pyramid of

numbers show how many organisms were involved in each level of food chain. Food chains always begin with the sun as the source of energy and the pyramid of numbers always has the producer as the base. Pyramid of numbers have more producers at the bottom than consumers at the top.

The similarities are that they both are models and they both have the same organisms. They both have top consumers and they both show how energy is passed down from organism to organism.

What is the food chain for the trilobite?

The Tyrannosaurus rex lived in Western North America from Canada to Texas between 68 and 65.5 million years ago. In the northern part of their range, prey would have included Edmontosaurus and Triceratops, and perhaps smaller dinosaurs such as Pachycephalosaurus and Ornithomimus on occasion. In the southern area, they would have hunted Edmontosaurus, Torosaurus, and potentially even the sauropod Alamosaurus. Their prey ate plants such as conifers, ferns and potentially some early flowering plants.

Why isn't all the energy from one level of the food chain passed onto the next level?

because through each animal in the food chain at least 90% of the energy is lost through, eating, running, sleeping getting away from predators etc Because of trophic efficiency, only 10 percent of the energy of the previous level (or "link" as you say) makes it to the next level

How do fruit flies fit into a food web?

How do some producers and consumers each rely light from the sun?

The majority of producers (eg green plants) rely on the sun's energy to produce food. Primary consumers eat plants so in an indirect way the consumers are also relying on the sun's energy for their food
