Why is food web more realistic than a food chain?

Food webs and food chains are different things, but a food web is a more accurate representation of most animals' diet. A food chain is simply a line of one of each type of animal, so it might have one producer, one primary consumer, one secondary consumer etc, whilst a web is more complex, and represents more animals.

For example:

Food Chain: Cabbage-->snail-->Thrush-->sparrowhawk

Food Web: http://www.bigelow.org/edhab/fitting_algae.html (pictures and more info here)

How would it impact the food chain if a emperor penguin became extinct?

will the hervivor will all die and all the animal will have nothing to eat and will die.

Giraffe food web?

It's preferred diet is mainly other venomous and non-venomous snakes but includes small reptiles, birds and amphibians as well.

General Information

King Cobra Scientific Cassification

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Reptilia

Order: Squamata

Suborder: Serpentes

Family: Elapidae

Genus: Ophiophagus

Species: O. Hannah

The largest poisonous snake would be the King Cobra(Ophiophagus hanna), the Latinword Ophiophagus means "Snake-eater".The king cobras average size is 13-14 ft. (3.96-4.26m) weighing around 20 lbs (9 kg), they can reach a length of around 18.5ft (5.6388m) weighing over 40lbs. (18.1436kgs.) and lives in the Rainforest's and grasslands of Southeast Asia, India and China. Color is generally tan, olive-green or black with faint pale yellow cross bands, the females lay around 50 eggs, the king cobras are the only snakes who construct a nest for their hatchlings which they incubate and protect until they emerge in 60 to 80 days, the young are called Hatchlings and are about 1.5 ft. (50cm ) long at birth, the King cobra is very fast and agile with an average lifespan of about 20 years.

Although not the most toxic of poisonous snakes a king cobra can kill an elephant with one bite, the king cobra tracks by site and smell then kills it's prey by striking and injecting it with venom and swallowing it whole, it's preferred diet is mainly other venomous and non-venomous snakes but includes small reptiles, birds and amphibians as well. King Cobras are aggressive and will rear up to confront the intruder where most other cobras will slither away and hide. The only predators are the mongoose and man.

How do honeybees collect nectar?

Landing within a flower and using mouthparts describe the ways that honeybees collect nectar. The nectar is swallowed into the part of the esophagus that is known as the honey stomach. The honey stomach will expand until full, which tells the honeybee to return to the hive and transfer the nectar to a worker bee for processing into honey.

What does the food web of a puma look like?

A Bengal tiger's main prey is mainly buffalo, young elephants, etc. and they live in India. That should give you some idea! ; )

How does jaguars fit into the food chain?

Sharks live on a diet of fish and sea mammals (dolphins and seals) and turtles and seagulls. Sharks even eat other sharks. A blacktip shark might eat a dogfish shark, a bull shark might eat a blacktip shark, and a tiger shark might eat a bull shark!!

Food chain of a tiger?

Bengal tigers are apex predators and are at the top with no natural predator (except cubs can be threatened bey other animals) they are at the top of the food chain. (humans are not natural predators

Are starfish secondary primary tertiary consumers?

No it is a secondary consumer. They eat mussels which in turn eat seaweed.

Example food chain?

Grass -------> Grasshopper-------------> Snake----------------->Hawk----------->Fungi

(producer) (primary consumer) (secondary consumer) (tertiary (decomposer)

consumer)

Cabbage--------------> caterpillar----------->snake------------>Hawk------------->Fungi

Plants----------->Herbivorous insects------------>Lizards-----------> Carnivorous birds

Plants----------->Herbivorous insects--------->Insectivorous birds--------->Cats

The sequence by which energy, in the form of food, passes from plant to animal and then to other animals is called a food chain

How long can a food chain be?

A food chain can only be up to 5 trophic levels in length, including the producer.

Only a small proportion of the previous organism's energy is passed down through trophic levels to the next organism. This diminishes the energy available, so there is little or no energy to be gained after the 5th stage of a food chain.

:)

What does the food chain consist of?

A Food Chain consists of different populations of species, and how they live together. Say you have a man, wolf, Caribou, and arctic trees. A Food Chain would show you that the Caribou eats the arctic trees, the Wolf eats the Caribou, and the Man eats the Wolf. (Don't take that too literally. I'm not sure how accurate my example is.) :)

Why are tree and plants called producers?

YES because only plants can make food. Therefore, all plants are producers and also all producers are plants. Think about it, amoebas aren't producers or plants, deer aren't producers or plants, fish aren't producers or plants. ALL THINGS COME FROM THE SUN AND THE SUN GOES TO PLANTS!

Are Sparrowhawks Carnivores Herbivores Or Omnivores?

Birds are all of these. Remember there are MANY types of bird and some species are carnivores, others herbivores and yet others are omnivores.

How do you draw the flow of energy through a food web?

by moving up through the arrows in the picture, from producer, to primary consumer, to secondary, and so on in so forth, ending in decomposers. using herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.

What is the okapi's food chain?

The Okapis are herbivores. They primarily feed on trees, leaves, grass, ferns and fungi. Many plant species fed upon by these animals are poisonous to us.

They are also known to consume certain reddish clay soils to meet their mineral and salt requirements.

What does the food chain always end with?

A food chain always ends with a consumer.

It always starts with a producer.

You need the producer to make the food. You can't have a food chain without food.

You need the consumer to make it a chain. If nobody eats the producer, then it isn't a food chain, it's just a lucky plant.

What might happen if the snake was eliminated?

If the snake was eliminated or went extinct, it might sound good as there'll be no more snakebites and snake poison. The lizards and frogs are insectivores and they try to get rid of some nasty insect pests. The snake eat these small insectivores, which is another snake impact as it allows more nasty insects pests to survive, so that's another good thing about snake extinction. Some carnivorous birds of prey like the owl, parrot, kite, hawk, eagle eats the snake but they'll still be fine as they still have other food to eat. There's hardly any negative outcomes about snake extinction.

By the way, there's a 5-linked food chain with a snake which is:
Grass>Grasshopper>Frog>Snake>Hawk
Food Chain Explanation: The grasshoppers eat the grasses, the frogs eat the grasshoppers, the snakes eat the frogs and the hawks eat the snakes.
Food Chain Trophic Precedence:
Grass-Producer
Grasshopper-Primary Consumer
Frog-Secondary Consumer
Snake-Tertiary Consumer (Apex Prey)
Hawk-Quaternary Consumer (Apex Predator)

What animal in the food chain depends on grass?

Well, I'm just naming only a few that come to mind right now... A Cow... Um... Giraffes? Horses, and if so, also Zebras Sheep and I don't know, a bunch of animals that graze, (I think mostly farm animals.)

Why do food chains end?

Food chains can't go on forever because each consumer is only able to receive 10 percent of the energy that the plant that was eaten had. There are also only so many animals that are able to eat other animals.
