If you are trying to refer to a girl as your heart would it be ma coeure or mon coeur?
Interesting question, but it's mon cœur, definitely. Gender agreement is a purely grammatical affair. The only nouns that can change gender are the ones that are specifically allowed to do so, such as most "people nouns", e.g. un enfant / une enfant, mon chéri / ma chérie, etc. But even some of those have a prescribed gender, e.g. une personne, une victime.
D-Day was name given to 6 June 1944, which was the day that the Allied Forces launched an invasion of France to free that country from German control.
At that time, France was occupied by Nazi Germany and ruled by a puppet government known as the Vichy government, because its headquarters were in the town of Vichy.
The forces defending Normandy were German army troops from a variety of different sources. The German troops included several regiments of soldiers from countries under German occupation that were fighting in the German Army - mainly Eastern European countries.
The Allied troops invading Normandy included British, American and Canadian troops, as well as the Free French, who were French soldiers and sailors who had escaped the surrender of France to Nazi Germany in 1940 and continued to fight the Germans alonside the Allies. The Free French were led by General Charles de Galle, who would become President of France after the Germans were evicted from the country.
To summarise, on D-Day, British, Canadian, American and Free French troops attacked German troops in Normandy.

Without the US' help, Operation Overlord (D-Day) would never have happened. Without D-Day, France would have never been liberated. The US wanted to liberate France as the stepping stone to driving into Germany and ending WWII in Europe. Plus the US did feel some kindred towards France since they aided us in our revolution. And the French by and large were very kind to our troops in WWI. I have to set the record straight here to protect ALL soldiers that help liberate France. It was the U.S./Canada/French/Italian who bond together to help liberate. Canada went against Hitler and then 2 years later the U.S. jumped in. All soldiers lost in that terrible war are worth mentioning. Sorry, there were other countries, but the main one was Britain! Remember good old Winston Churchill?
Answer
A coalition defeated the German army. England, Canada, US, "Free" French army who fled in England, but also Polish solidiers also settled in England. And many other countries.
