What was the relation between Germany and France before World War 1?

Relations between the two countries had been very bad indeed since the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. The terms imposed on France at the end of the war were harsh. Most of Alsace and Lorraine was annexed by Germany despite the fact that the inhabitants regarded themselves as French. In addition, France had to pay very high reparations. In France many wanted revenge. In the 1890s Bismarck said that the peace treaty he had imposed on France in 1871 had been a blunder as it had created a 'permanent enemy' of Germany.

What was Plan Seventeen during World War 1?

Plan seventeen was a plan used in World War I. It was the French battle plan. The French were feeling resentful towards the German because of the Prussian war forty years prior. The Prussians, now Germans, had taking the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine from the French. The French planned to take them back. Plan seventeen involved an all out attack on Alsace and Lorraine by soldiers who fought fast and deadly, no matter the odds. They wanted to win back their lost provinces. Unfortunately, the plan failed and the French retreated to stop the Germans attacking in the Schlieffen Plan.

Did France help America with the Civil War?

No, it helped in the Revolutionary War.

In the Civil War, the French were pro-confederate because they were trying to gain influence in Mexico, and it would suit them to have a new nation that was pro-French, in between Mexico and the USA.

At the beginning of the war, they were ready to send military aid if the British did the same. But when Lee lost the Battle of Antietam, the British said they were not convinced of Confederate viability.

Following this unexpected Northern victory, Lincoln was in a strong enough position to change his original war-aims, and declared that he was now waging a war specifically against slavery. After that, neither the British or the French could be seen to intervene on the other side.
