Geo Metro

The Geo Metro was a small economy car produced between 1989 and 2001. The first generation model was available as 3-door and 5-door hatchback, as well as 4-door notchback sedan. It came in three trim levels: XFi, Base and LSi.

How do you repair the horn on a 97 Geo Metro Is there a fuse?

The fuse should be under the "wheel" inside, beside the brake petal. There should be a fuse box there.

If the fuse is not blown, the Metro has a mechanism inside the steering wheel that often goes bad. It's a wire wrapped around on itself that winds and unwinds as you turn the wheel, rather than a slip ring. This mechanism often fails with age, and must be replaced- it can't be repaired. To work on it puts you in the immediate vicinity of the air bag, which means you probably don't want to do it yourself if you are not an experienced mechanic/electrician. Think: "boom"!

I have seen people cut the horn wire under the dash near the fuse box, and wire in a momentary contact switch to ground, completing the horn circuit. This is not a good idea; in an emergency, you will likely reflexively pound on the horn buttons on the wheel, which you have just disconnected. If someone else is driving the car, this is even more likely.

Bottom line- if the fuse is not the problem, a decent shade tree mechanic can replace the faulty part. Otherwise, it's time to go to a auto electrical shop.

What does the check engine light mean on a Geo?

the engine check light on ANY car means there is somthing wrong with the engine probably that it has overheated Yes, it can mean that your car is overheating, but it also can be one of many emmisions problems. Your best bet is either take it to a good mechanic, or buy a good book, such as a Haynes Manual for it, and it will explain what you need to check/replace. How do you replace outside door handle on 1993 Geo Metro LSI?

I'm working the same problem on my 92 Geo Prism, which may be the same or different. You got the door pannel off the inside yet? The roll up window is held on by a spring clip. Hook onto it with a bent cheap screw driver and pop it off. The inside door handle is held by a Phillips screw, then nudge the plastic piece forward to unhook it from the sheet metal. Pop the trim off the arm rest to expose the two Phillips screws. Pop the rest of the panel off with a firm pull. The top hard plastic stays on, just slide the panel out from under it.

Take off the plastic plug and you can reach the hex screws to loosen the exterior door handle. The hard part is removing the two coat hanger rods from the key lock and the plastic door handle. I broke the door handle (again) with my bare hands. Now I'm looking patiently for the replacement part. I could swear I saw on on internet fot $20 but can't see it now. Called two parts stores and three junk yards so far without luck.

Timing Belts and Chains

What are the timing marks and how are they lined up on a 1995 Geo Metro 3 cylinder?

You should look at the sticker on the botton of your hood. It Should tell you TIMING "BTDC" which is the recommended timing for your application. Such as my 1996 Geo Metro says 5 Degrees "BTDC" (Before Top Dead Center)(cylinder 1) I would not go much more the recommended. Replacing a head is an exspensive mistake. Good luckat the bottom of the timing-belt cover align the mark on the crank pulley @ 10 degrees, then on your cam you should see two marks, one has a small dimple below it.use the mark w/o the dimple and line it up with the small notch located on the valve-cover.be sure the belt is good and tight or she'll jump out time. that's how i set the time on my 95' and now she runs like top. hope that helped...

Can the electrical system be reset on a Geo Metro?

Re-set? No, but what is happening to make you want to "re-set" it?

The only thing that comes to mind when you say 'reset' would be clear the computer codes. On my 94 you remove, then replace the tail light fuse. But on most cars you can remove on battery cable for a minute, though some might have battery backup (for the computer), I doubt the geo does.

Head torque sequence on 92 1 liter engine?

4 8 6 2 3 5 7 1 That is the torque sequence when looking at the engine. The sequence is simple enough but describing it in words (without the benefit of pictures) would be somewhat complex. Your local library may have a manual for your car, or you may have to visit your local auto parts store. Just about every publisher of DIY auto service manuals will include this information in their publication.

Brake Fluid and Lubrication
Geo Metro

Where do you put the brake fluid on a Geo Metro 1997?

Master cylinder, located, driver's side, firewall. This information can be found in your owner's manual. If you do not have one, then I suggest you get one. You need an owner's manual to know what items to service and when, and for specifications. You can order one from a dealer, find one at a salvage yard, ebay, or one of these sites: http://www.carownermanual.com/ http://vehicleownersmanual.com/ http://www.vintage-books.com/owncat.htm Brake fluid levels decrease as wear on the brakes increases. Simply adding brake fluid to a reservoir may not be all that needs attention. Be sure to have your brake linings checked (pads and/or shoes, depending on model) before they wear to the point of either failing of damaging the rotors/drums.

Rocker arm torque specs for a 1995 geo metro 1.3Lit?

about 150 INCH/pounds.... Or 12 ft/lbs torque.... not very much just snug them all up little by little..... then tighten each one a bit more with regular ratchet wrench starting in the middle and working out to both ends. final torque is 12 ft/lbs... reinstall valve cover. Now the important part. You must wait about a half hour before you start the car... If you don't you may shove a valve right down onto a piston.... The lifters need time to settle.

What is the factory Audio Color Wiring for a 1992 Geo Metro?

Just go to Autozone or Advance and buy a Haynes repair manual for your car. They only run about 16 dollars and they have very good wiring schematics in the back of the book. This will not only help you with the radio wiring, but will tell you how to do normal maintenance as well as major repairs.

Why is your Metro 114 Auto gearbox sticking in 3rd gear when in drive or low how do you fix the problem?

You probably have a blown fuse. The same one that controls the radio, dash lights and some other accessories also controls the transmission shifter. My 92 Metro was blowing a fuse regularly. It was the 10 amp fuse that powered the turn signals and reverse lights. When the fuse was blown I had to use the manual shifter release to shift out of "Park" and the car always tried to start in third gear. I could manually downshift but I still did not have turn signals until I replaced the fuse. After about 6 fuses, I decided to take more permenent action. I replaced the fuse with a direct replacement, self setting circuit breaker for about $7. Then, I could hear the circuit breaker tripping when I shifted into "Reverse". About 5 seconds later I could hear the circuit breaker resetting itself. So, now I know that the "Reverse" detection switch or "Reverse" lights have a short. But I really don't care because the symptoms are self correcting.

How do you adjust the timing on a 1993 Geo Metro hatchback with the three cylinder engine?

This requires a timing light

You're supposed to put a jumper wire between the ground terminal and the test switch terminal of the diagnostic connector plug before adjusting the timing. The connector plug is on the firewall under the hood, next to the coil. If you look at the socket straight on with the plastic catch on the left, ground is the lower right hole, test switch is right above it. Then hook up the timing light.

The distributor is held in place by two bolts in adjustment slots. Rotate the distributor clockwise to retard timing, counterclockwise to advance timing.

How do you remove the drivers side rear tire?

if you're asking about the wheel and tire, loosen the lugnuts while the vehicle is on the ground, jack it up, then remove the lugnuts. If you're asking about taking the tire off the rim, it's easier to have a shop do it. Just take the tire and wheel in and ask them to take it off, should never cost more than a few bucks. If your wheel is wedged onto the hub, jack the car up and put jack stand underneath the vehicle - DON'T PERFORM THIS PROCEDURE WITH A JACK ONLY! Loosen the lug nuts slightly. Jack up the vehicle. Loosen the lug nuts all the way out - don't totally remove them or you may end up having the wheel fall on you. With the vehicle SECURELY raised on jack stands, position a block of wood near the edge of the wheel rim. Hit the block of wood with a large mallet - don't hit the rim with the mallet or you will damage it. If you don't have a mallet, wear soft-soled shoes and give the edge of the rim a good, solid blow (or two or three) with the heel of your foot. Otherwise, if the wheel is rusted on, you also can try to loosen the lug nuts with a wrench etc. and then re-tighten them by hand when the car is on the ground. Re-loosen the lug nuts about 1/4 of a turn, preferrably on cement or tar. then just drive the car forward a little bit and press the brakes hard, after doing this once or twice it may break loose enough that you can continue to take the wheel off the car with a jack ect.

What is the torque for the screws on a valve cover on a 1994 Geo Metro 1 3?

Not aware of a torque rating however a bit of common sense applies here. These "acorn' nuts can only be screwed on so far being closed end nuts. Also when tightening these nuts you are compressing a rubber gasket. In practical terms when it begins to feel tight it probably is and you need to stop. If there IS a torque spec for those nuts it will be expressed in inch pounds. That's a SMALL amount of tightening.

4 ft-lbs (maybe 14) be careful if you break the weak aluminum walls of the valve cover dished area, JB weld won't help you maintain vacuum, and you will spend a year in the Junkyards looking for a new one like me.

What could be wrong with a 1997 Geo Metro that will not run but will idle for a few seconds?

You might have a catalytic converter that is clogged. Could be the fuel pump. It may be providing enough fuel to start and operate the vehicle, but shuts down immediately so your engine starves. Could be out of time! MAy have jumped! I have a 93 doing the same thing and it jumped time on me!
