Most people are familar with the September 5, 1975 attempt by Lynette 'Squeaky' Fromme in Sacramento CA. Fromme pointed a gun at Ford but was grabbed by the Secret Service. She got a life sentence for that stunt.
The second occured 17 days later in San Francisco. On September 22, Sara Jane Moore fired a revolver at Ford but this time an onlooker shoved the gun off target. Moore received a life sentence also. Ford must not have been very popular in California.
Interesting fact:Lynette 'Squeaky' Fromme was a member of the notorious Manson Family, and was in fact one of the first members. She met Charles Manson during the "summer of love" in the Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco in the 1960s.
Gerald P. Wergin (3/3/1922 - 7/09/1998). He served as a fighter pilot in the 80th Fighter Group of the 10th Army Air Force in the China, Burma, India (CBI) theater of WWII. He was the Blue Squadron Leader of the Burma Banshees so named for the wailing sound of their planes when diving. Their motto "Angles on Our Wings" is a reference to their primary mission; to provide air cover they to crews flying supplies. The treacherous route through the massive Himalayan Moutains between India and China is famously known as "The Hump."
Wergin attained the rank of Captain, racked up 156 combat missions, was awarded The Distinguished Flying Cross & one Oak Leaf Clusters, The Air Medal & three Oak Leaf Clusters and a Presidential Unit Citation.
