I don't own one, but I will next summer. They are high maintenence dogs. They have high standards. You need to be able to know how to take care of these dogs. They need a soft hand when they're handeled. Never hit, slap, kick, or yell. You never, ever under any circumstances leave a German Shepherd in a hot car. If you do, that dog will die in less than 10 seconds. I'm not kidding. Its true. If your not capable of taking care of these dogs, then the German Shepherd is NOT the right dog for you.

- Yes, I do believe they are as I have a short hair. I think that long haired German shepherds are harder to brush and clean because of their long hair.
- I own a Long Hair German Shepherd, and we do not have to brush her once a day. They seem like they would get muddy and matted, but actually, I have a retriever, and she get's much more mats than my shepherd. We take them to the groomers for a bath with soap and brushing once every couple months, and in between we don't have to brush her.

German shepards need lots of exercise, if you were to have one in an apartment you would need to give it a ton of exercise and outdoor time, it would be a huge commitment if you werent willing to walk that dog two to three times a day for long intervals it really wouldn't be fair. German shepards are also very intellegent and need stimulation you would need to give it lots of entertaining toys and puzzle games. If you have to, you could but a smaller, less active dog would be a lot happier in an apartment

IWH wouldn't have the speed? - They were breed for coursing deer, wolves, and horses back in in the dark ages for dragging men and knights of horse.
Toughness - They were not only breed for battle, but for killing WOLVES... SOLO not in a pack
Heart - IWH are some of the most Loyal, courage's dog that have ever lived. Fact. Kings and queens would have packs of them as they would guard them with their lives.
People still use IWH's to hunt Coyotes which they do very well, on there own, and also boars.
Fact - You take a working IWH used for (coursing, hunting) keeping in mind the average male height is not 36" and weighting in at 140 - 160lb put it up against a working GS the GS will lose, and quickly... I would say he would run away with its tail between its legs, but when you have a 140lb + sighthound chasing you down, with the lung capacity which near matches a wolve, you ain't gonna get very far.

German Shepherds are incredibly smart dogs. On a scale of 1 to 5 ( 1 being the least smart and 5 being ther smartest) a German Shepherd is 5. I would recommend that you start training the dog at about 2 or 3 months. This way your dog can learn young and do more in its lifetime. You have to be stern but gentle because you do not want to upset the dog. You should have a good relationship with the dog too before you begin any harder trainings. Dogs are very smart, and they can tell when you are mad at them or happy or pround. In the facility where I work, the dogs must be 12 weeks or older. The dogs learn well when rewarded properly.
