Well from your question, I'm guessing your a beginner in computers. So I'll tell you what the video cards are used for, what they can do, and where to find the best deals and the best ones. Well First off, video cards (graphics cards) are bought to be put in one's computer and then the computer can run better graphics (how good it looks). The Better the graphics card, the better the graphics. So Basically Graphics cards let you play games with picture. Two more things to have these graphics cards and play those games is to have a good enough processor (CPU) and a good Monitor (tv screen). Yes, check to make sure who makes the card. Such as Nvidia or ATI. Then check to see if your motherboard is [nvidia]SLI or [ati]CROSSFIRE compatible. I know it supports Shader Model 5.0 so i am assuming that it can run 3.0 but personally i would just use 5.0 so much better.

Most likely the driver for your graphics adapter was not found. And windows uses standard VGA driver. You need to check your video card manufacture website for drivers compatible with windows 7. I'm sure that NVIDIA has such drivers.

you can normally get updates from Microsoft or you should have a dick that came with the graphics card that should let you install the drivers

Sometimes PCI, PCI-E, AGP and other slots on motherboards are color coded... but often they are not. If they are different colors, it is usually just that different slots are different colors on the mother board in question. But there is no color coding standard among mother board makers in general.
