The southern end of the Great Barrier Reef begins just northeast of Bundaberg, Queensland, and it is a distance of 1 294 km, or 804 miles from Sydney. However, the Great Barrier Reef then continues north up the Queensland coast, and one of the most popular cities from which to take tours to the Reef is Cairns. The driving distance from Sydney to Cairns is around 2700km.

Most whales are always moving, they don't live in just one place. However, many species of whale have been reported in the Great Barrier Reef. The ones I know about are humpback whales and dwarf minke whales that pass through it every year.

More than 30 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises have been recorded on the Great Barrier Reef. There are also dugongs, sea turtles, mollusc, pipefish, sea horses, and sea snakes. More than 1,500 species of fish live there, too.

The Great Barrier Reef is a giant coral reef. It is basically a large collection of aragonite structures produced by living organisms. In a sense, it is neither man made nor God made. (If you are a creationist, and believe that God created all the creatures of the earth, then you could say that the Great Barrier Reef was indirectly made by God or a byproduct of Gods creation).

An example of this is a mesh screen or a porous material, which can facilitate the movement of air and water while blocking larger objects.

The Great Barrier Reef stretches over 2,000km along the Northeastern Australian Coast otherwise known as the Queensland coast. It reaches from the mainland town of Port Douglas to Bundaberg. Examples of Hotels found in this area include: Airlie Beach Hotel, Daydream Island Resort and Spa, The Pearly Shell Motel, Bluewater Harbour Motel Bowen, and Hamilton Island Reef View Hotel. It should be noted that other than hotels and resorts, there are many other opportunities for accommodation in this area including vacation apartments, bungalows and camping.

The Great Barrier Reef covers approximately 344,400 square kilometers (or about 133,000 square miles). A standard American football field, including the end zones, is about 5,351 square meters (or 0.0014 square kilometers). Using these figures, roughly 245 million football fields could fit into the Great Barrier Reef, highlighting the reef's vast size.

The fact of the matter is that we are all part of a whole

and our very lives depend on our relationships with one another

and the planet itself. There is nothing in the universe that is that you aren't.

But we keep treating the earth as if it's individual parts,

to be hacked and sawed,dismembered and ultimately, poisoned.

Acquisition, consumption, and the belief that all that is not human is a purchasable commodity, to be used to the point of extinction is killing us all. Life, ALL life and its continuance, is interdependent on itself.

your litter genies for kitty, and your disposable everything, and cling to your identification with your objects, and the belief that somehow you are exempt

from the laws of nature. If only we'd learned to get along and treat living things with respect we might have stood a chance.

It is, however, shrinking, and it is unknown by how much, or whether this is permanent. Climate scientists who subscribe to the theory of anthropogenic global warming (i.e. caused by man's activities) predict that the Great Barrier Reef may lose up to 95% of its coral by the middle of the current century. Although the coastline parallel to the Great Barrier Reef has been settled by Europeans for less than 200 years, these scientists believe that the Reef has been shrinking by 20% every 100 years.

Climate scientists who subscribe to the theory that global warming is cyclical perhaps have a less drastic view, as they believe that the coral will regenerate, as it has apparently done so in the past. There is evidence that the coral goes down much deeper than first thought, and this is an important factor in its regeneration. For this reason, it may well always be the largest barrier reef in the world.
