Generally, a few days before Kindling (giving birth) a doe will pull fur from her dewlap, belly & sides to make a soft warm nest for her kits. It's also recommended that she have access to straw or hay to nest in.

If you know the date your doe was bred you can add a nestbox and straw or hay to her cage on about day 26-27. Does generally kindle between 28-31 days & become very intent on building their nests in the days just prior.

Once your guinea pig has got pregnant, it should take an average of 10 weeks until the pups arrive.

The signs are:

Week 1: There are no signs.

Week 2: Your sow (female) may start drinking lots more than usual.

Week 3: Your guinea pig will be putting on more weight and the abdomen muscles will tighten.

Week 4: An experienced breeder will be able to feel small fetuses.

Week 5: Sow usually looks pregnant, sort of rounded at the stomach. You will be able to feel the outlines of the fetuses.

Week 7: You will be able to feel the babies kick when you rest your hand on her tummy.

Week 9: Your sow will start to find it difficult to move around, but should be able to still eat and drink. The pelvic bones will separate sometime during this week.

Week 10: The baby guinea pigs should be born!

It is a common mistake to make - but DO NOT put the vitamin drops in the water. Don't try and feed her the fruit, leave it in her bowl and she should decide to eat it when shes hungry.

True story: Pigs aren't IMMUNE to poison. You may be thinking of snake venom. It's all about size. If the pig is bitten, the venom won't be fatal because it is sreading over a larger body mass.

But, this is not to say that the pig won't be very, very, very sick.

I must warn you that a leash isn't such a good thing for them because it can cut off circulation, or choke them, most people think, and say: "Oh it's soooo cute a guinea pig on a leash just trying to walk, oh how sweet!"

I wouldn't try it. I had a hamster and a rat and tried to put them together. Now I only have a rat and a empty hamster cage. Rodents only like their own species. Gerbils like gerbils, rats like rats, and so on.

Me too. I had 2 hamsters. My rat got out of its cage and lets just say i had to go to 2 funerals last weekend. See, rats are scavengers and will kill and eat anything so don't try it. I had to put that rat down :( it stopped eating because it liked hamster flesh better than its food.
