Hey I have a fender Mexican standard stratocaster. The screws at each end of my 3 single coil pickups have all rusted and i was wondering if i could change them and if so how to change them?

Remove one carefully and take it to your local hardware store. They should have it. See if they have it in stainless steel. If you replace them one at a time carefully you will not have to take off the pick up plate. There are springs between the surface of the plate and the pick up flange where the screw goes through. If you can take out the screw without moving the spring you can put it the new screw without a lot of work. It is easy to remove the entire pickup assembly by removing all the edge screws, loosening the strings and sliding the assembly carefully under the strings. Now you can replace the pup screws. Be careful. A shot of pot/switch cleaner in the switch and pots wouldn't hurt while they are exposed.

Thanks very much for such a detailed answer. I have one problem though, when i try and un screw the pickup screws at each end of the pickups, it just keeps turning and doesn't unscrew. Do i need to take of the scratchplate first?

or do i need to be more aggressive with it?

thanks in advance!

How does a guitar tone knob work?

I am going to give you the simple answer. There are 2 parts to a tone knob, a potentiometer(pot) and a capacitor(cap). The pot is used in the volume and the tone knobs. In the tone pot a cap is placed from the input lead of the pot and ground. All sounds have amplitude(volume) and frequency(makes the sound change from treble to bass). When the two are combined you have a device that will change the frequency of the sound. As you turn the pot it's resistance will change and since it is tied to a cap the change is in frequency. If you want to do the math,

How does a guitar battle work?

Traditionally, a guitar battle or a guitar duel is a competition between two guitarists in an attempt to see who is the more skilled musician. Often in a full-band jam, one guitarist will play a phrase, followed by the second guitarist repeating it and maybe adding his or her own style to it. The phrases gradually become more complex, with each guitarist trying to out-do the other's most recent phrase. When one guitarist cannot at least repeat the other's phrase, you have the winner of the duel.

Check out the end of the '80s movie Crossroads for a cool guitar duel between a guitar protege played by Ralph Maccio (The Karate Kid) and Steve Vai.

If you do a search for his name in Google, you should come up with some fan sites and some interesting photos. Yes, it was "Hound Dog" Taylor and you can find his CDs at Amazon. Who was Slim Whitman's Steel Guitarist?

Back in the early 50s Slim performed and recorded with Hoot Rains. In the 60s a variety of steel guitarists were used - including Jerry byrd, Pete Drake and others, although Slim did not use steel on all his recordings. He toured South Africa in 1965 and used Lester Fry.

In 1970 Slim returned to the UK and amazed everyone by breaking box office records throughout the country over many ensuing tours. In those years he used Jerry West - an Englishman - on his tours and on a few recordings made in the UK. West was one of the few who accurately recreated the original "Singing Guitar" sound.

With the unparallelled success of the Suffolk Marketing TV LP compilation "All My Best" in the early 80s, Slim's career enjoyed a collosal revival and he eventually set up his own group with whom he did shows and made recordings. Jimmy Crawford worked with him a lot during that time.

Now well into his 80s but still in good voice, Slim perfortms only occasionally these days. He has a group of musicians that he likes to work with but I do not know who the steel guitarist is. I do know that slim is of the view that he is one of the best he has worked with.
