Many volcanoes on Hawaii have been known to be destructive, and Mount Kilauea is the most active volcano on the Big Island. But the most destructable volcano to date was the Mauna Loa volcano which erupted late in the evening of June 1, 1950. Massive lava flows travelled 14 miles down the destroyed part of the village of Ho'okena-mauka, including several houses and the post office. By daybreak the flow cut off escape from the village when it crossed the only road entering and exiting the village in two places. Thankfully no one was injured or killed in the eruption.

The Hawaiian Island chain formed from a mantle plume and moving plates.

The rising mantle plume causes crustal material to melt at depth, which results in volcanism and finally in the formation of a volcanic island. Since the Pacific Plate is in continuous (although slow) movement, the same mantle plume will cause volcanism subsequently in different places and this is expressed at the surface as a chain of volcanoes or volcanic islands.

In the original Hawaii 5-0 (1968-80) Danny grew up in Hawaii, went to the University of Hawaii, and Danno was his Hawaiian nickname. In the new Hawaii 5-0, Danny comes from New Jersey, and it is his daughter, Grace, who gives him the nickname Danno. The others use it to make Danny irritated, as would happen in any family group.

On the Big Island, it's sometimes lava. Since 1989, Mauna Kea volcano has been erupting pretty continuously, and the lava flow down the hillside has sometimes overrun residential neighborhoods.

Fortunately, the lava is fairly dense and slow-moving, so there has been time to pack up and move out of the way. Sometimes, the "pack up" has been fairly significant; entire houses have been jacked up and moved away, and a historic church that was in the path of the lava was similarly lifted off of its foundations and carried out of the lava flow.

No one really knows for sure what Petain's thinking was, but the French armies were in a hopeless military position at the time that Petain came to power in June 1940. He believed that the Germans had won the war, that Great Britain wouldn't be able to resist the Germans fighting alone, and that he needed to make a deal with the Germans on the best terms he possibly could.

Petain is known to have deeply sympathized with the French people and the suffering they endured in the First World War, and on more than one occasion as leader of the wartime Vichy government, he made dishonorable agreements with the Nazis to make life easier on the people. One of his advisors rebuked him for this, telling him "you care more about the French than you do about France."

Politically, Petain held to a philosophy similar to Franco; a Fascist economic system with a conservative Catholic bend; he put this into place when he came to power. He may have seen the French defeat as a way to remake the country into what he thought it should be. Indeed, he blamed the defeat on France's turn toward liberalism.

All in all, he probably hoped that his ideas would take root in France, that his deal with Nazi Germany would keep France out of the remainder of the war and protect its people from the worst of it, and that the war would end in a way that France would not forever be a German vassal.

Hawaii is only a giant hot spot about 3 miles underground. Since 1981 Hawaii has been erupting non stop with quiet and not explosive lava it has grown hundreds of feet longer then it was. Also if you didn't know all of the Hawaiin islands were made up of lava that came from deep under the ocean and sea floor. When the lava cools down it hardens and becomes a hard rock that is obviasly fertile and can grow plants and grass on it.

It is Florida at it's nearest point to Cuba, which is 90 miles. That is the southernmost contiguous state. If we include all of US, Hawaii got the Sothernmost state winner at South Point, Hawaii.
