I read in an electronics catalog about "What do I do with my TV when it is not HD compatible?" I continued to read since I was wondering the same thing and apparently the federal government is standardizing HD in February of 2009. This should help to dramatically lower the prices of such HD devices like blu-ray players and HD-DVD players and probably current gerneration video game consoles.

Check the model number and look it up online. You might find it on the manufacturers website.

Hz or Hertz is a measure of frequency. It is used as a measure of all frequencies and not just those in television.

Televisions use several separate images every second to give the impression of a moving image. In North America, a full image is displayed 30 times each second, so it is described as a 30Hz signal. However, the signal is delivered in two parts, one after the other, hence the same signal is also described as 60Hz, with 60 "fields" being shown each second.


Some televisions boast 120Hz and even 240Hz operation. The signal delivered to the television is still 60Hz. The television takes the incoming signal and creates an intermediate image between each field. It does this by looking at the fields preceding and following the time of the intermediate field and then shows what it thinks would have been in the picture at that time. The idea is to provide a smoother picture with less flicker. Sometimes, the television does a good job of this conversion, sometimes it doesn't. It is vital to look at 120Hz and 240Hz televisions carefully to decide if the faster display rate actually improves the appearance of the image. Sometimes, it makes the image worse - hardly a good reason to invest more money into a television.


In Europe, the frame frequency is 25Hz (or 50Hz for field rate). Therefore, the high frequency televisions will operate at 100Hz or 200Hz. The principle of operation is identical to the 60Hz signals.


Regardless of some of the more outrageous claims by badly informed salesmen, broadcast signals are 60Hz or 50Hz. Broadcast signals are never higher than these rates and therefore, 100 or 120Hz televisions don't receive higher frequency signals than conventional televisions.


Finally, while talking of frequencies, the 60Hz field rate in North America and other NTSC regions in fact is not quite 60Hz. Due to technical limitations way back in the 1950s, NTSC color signals were broadacst at 59.94 fields per second or 29.97 frames per second. Although the technology no longer needs this somewhat odd frequency, the 59.94Hz standard remains in place to this day. Therefore, any broadcast signal claiming to be a 60Hz signal in fact will be 59.94Hz.

Cinema 3D is the trade name for LG's 3D televisions. They will all have similar viewing angles. However, if you need to be able to view a television from an extreme angle, take the time to check several brands and models in store to see which ones perform at the angles you will need in your own home. Remember that having an extremely wide viewing angle is of no benefit if you don't need to watch from a wide angle.

Both analog and digital tuners are likely to be incompatible with British broadcasts but if the television is to be used with a satellite or cable receiver then it is quite possible.

Check the following features:

Does the television handle 230V power supply. An information label on the cabinet will show the voltage range it accepts.

Does the television handle PAL 50Hz standard definition signals? The specification section of the manual may have the information.

Does the HDMI input support 50Hz signals at 576i, 720p, 1080i and 1080p resolutions? If it does, then it will accept British signal formats. Again, the manual may have these formats listed but you may need to contact LG to obtain a definitive answer. However, it is an unusual question to ask so don't be surprised if even the manufacturer doesn't have the answer.

In these days of ever lower prices for television equipment, the cost and effort to ship a television across the Atlantic is likely to outweigh any benefits.

In these days of replacement rather than repair it is very likely to cheaper to buy a new TV than to have a damaged screen replaced. Spare parts have always been far more expensive than the cost of the original part and never more so than LCD display panels.

If is also becoming something of a challenge to find repairers willing and able to undertake such a repair. If there is a local television repair center close by, it is worth asking for an estimate but do not be surprised if the cost exceeds a new model.

A LCD projector projects the image to a screen in front of it like a slide projector projects the images of slides onto a screen while a LCD tv projects from behind the screen like a large TV, the image coming to the screen from behind it rather from in front of it. HDTV stands for High Definition Television. HDTV is a digital television broadcasting standard. Since it is digital, the signals are composed of ones and zeroes -- the language of computers -- instead of waves. HDTV digital signals can contain more information that the old systems. The data can be compressed to allow up to six times more information in the same range of radio waves. Therefore, a broadcaster can send multiple data streams through the limited airwaves they are allowed to use. This is known as multicasting. The old TV standard was for 625 lines (not 525 lines across), with the television screen having a 4:3 "aspect ratio" (that is, the dimensions of the TV screen would be IN A RATIO of 4 to 3). Aspect ratio has very little to do with the broadcast standard - widescreen TV's are not necessarily HDTV (Mine's standard 625 PAL). HDTV can give display of 720 or 1080 lines, and the aspect ratio is 16:9. You can access HDTV with a digital converter on an old television. But this will not give you its full benefits. Newer models of TVs are being built with integrated receivers for HDTV.

Liquid Crystal Displays need a light source, as LCDs produce non themselves.

This light, used to be provided by Cold Cathode Flourescent Lamps (CCFL). These were delicate, failed after a while and used high voltage to run.

Modern LCDs use white, Light Emmiting Diodes to provide the light source.

These use low voltage and run cool. They could only be used now, because it took a while for development to produce a good white light, with a high light output.

So when a TV is advertised as having LED technology, this is what they are referring to.

It is still an LCD TV, but with LEDs providing the light and yes they are better. They use less power and are potentially more long lived.

TVs are being developed that use red, green and blue, LED's in a matrix to provide the picture content and light. They are used in very large displays at football stadiums.

Small versions are being developed using a flat film with LEDs 'printed' on it. This is called OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode). So far they can only make small screens using this tech. but they are getting better, but more expensive at first.

Let me give you some unsolicited advice. If you have bad credit, chances are that you are not so good at handling credit yet. Perhaps the best thing to do is to try to live within your financial means, until your credit heals. By then, you should be ready to get back into credit, responsibly.

Either the monitor or video card are bad or the wrong software driver is being used for the video card or the refresh rate is out of range for the monitor. How to resolve it: Plug in a different monitor swap the video card into another PC or try a new one make sure the correct software driver is being used for the video card.

In short, S-Video is a "step up" from Composite Video. So, S-Video is better, if you can tell the difference on the device in question.

Long answer:

My wording of "step up" is not entirely accurate - in video image processing, within a device the image is stored and processed at the highest quality possible (most of the time), and then only downgraded to the type of connection required. The following is the breakdown of the three most common connection types for analog video.

Video information usually consists of luminance (brightness) information, and chroma (color) information. This may or may not be explicitly synchronized by provided synchronization lines (as it is with a PC monitor). The most common standard used today is the so-called RGB - that's Red, Green and Blue (the three colors from the additive palette that can make up any other color when mixed).

When you combine that RGB information into Chroma and separate Luminance (brightness) from it, you get S-Video (4 pins, 2 wire pairs, one for Chroma and one for Luma). Of course some information is lost due to this combining, and quality suffers.

In order to get that information to "fit" into just one pair of wires (e.g. an RCA-RCA cable) it must be "mixed" in a way (not dissimilar to air TV broadcasting), as to have them 'pass through each other' without losing them. Once again - quality suffers from this, as the signals influence each other. This is Composite video.

Both HDMI and DVI carry up to 1080p and are the two common domestic interfaces. If the signal source and the TV are both capable of handling 1080p, they will almost certainly have an HDMI interface. However, the fact that an HDMI interface is fitted to a device does not mean that it will handle 1080p nor does it mean that it will handle HD at all - there are many SD DVD players that have HDMI but still only deliver SD material.

There are several factors that need to be taken into account. First, North America uses 110V while Europe is based on 230V power supplies. Many products will operate on any voltage between 100 - 260V but American products often are restricted to 110V. The only way to find out is to read the label on the equipment itself. It is possible to use a transformer to deliver 110V but they are not cheap. Second, the television signal is different between the two countries. North America uses NTSC at 60Hz and Europe operates on PAL at 50Hz. Again, many televisions will handle both but that cannot be assumed. Lastly, the tuners operate on different frequency bands so it is unlikely that a direct aerial connection will operate. So, it the television operates on PAL, has wide range power supply then maybe it will work in the UK. By the time shipping has been added to the overall cost, it is not likely to be worthwhile to bring a US television to the UK.

I have never seen a 4 amp fuse, only 3 and 5. The peak power draw and dump is when you switch on and off your TV. Try a 3 amp and if it blows when you turn it on, then no, your particular TV can't use a 3 amp fuse. Don't worry about this test, it shouldn't damage the TV and fuses cost so little.
