She was Arkansas First Lady for twelve years: the first time, from 1979–81, and then again from 1983–92.

The Secret Service is in charge of protecting our leaders. That is partly correct. Many agencies have protective duties. Most of the time, however, whenever "guys in dark suits and sunglasses with earpieces" are seen with a US person of interest, it is just assumed to be the US Secret Service. In this instance, the US Department of State's Diplomatic Security Service is charged with protecting the Secretary of State, in this case Hilllary Clinton. DSS as they're known protects the Secretary wherever she goes in the world, 24/7. There's a unique situation with Mrs. Clinton also being a former First Lady. The arrangement that was reached was that DSS protects Mrs. Clinton during all official functions, including international travel, and the USSS protects her on her down (free, or personal) time. Both agencies work very well together, despite the wrongfully assumed "turf wars" that people think exist. Although not known as well as the USSS, the DSS is the most widely represented Federal Law Enforcement branch of the US government, with agents posted in most every foreign country that the US has an Embassy or Consulate, as the DSS' agents are also responsible for security of Americans, American facilities and classified information overseas. You can find references to the DSS in movies such as US Marshals, where Robert Downy Jr. playes a rather bad DSS agent. Another reference can be found in the movie with Angelina Jolie, where she plays the wife of the slain reporter Daniel Pearl. The name escapes me, but it may be called A Brave Heart (?). Ms. Jolie's character liaises with the "RSO," which in DSS terms stands for Regional Security Officer - a.k.a. a DSS agent serving overseas. Another RSO reference can be found in the movie The Kingdom. When Jamie Fox's team goes to investigate a bombing in KSA, it was the RSO who was killed by the second blast. Not very uplifting examples, but examples nontheless. When not protecting Secretary Clinton, Foreign Ministers, the Dalai Lama, British Royalty, etc., the DSS investigates passport and visa fraud in the US. Just like the USSS investigates counterfeiting, the DSS has a vital role in upholding many USC's such as 18 USC 1028(A), 1542, 1544, 1001, etc. There are much fewer domestic field offices in the DSS than let's say the FBI, but the DSS agents manage to cover every state in the country and often liaise with their counterparts at the aforementioned Embassies and Consulates. This is often quite handy when the US Marshal Service comes asking about a fugitive they can not locate on their own. I hope this clears up the misconception that all of those stiffs walking with important people are Secret Service!
