Holocaust

The genocide of approximately 6 million European Jews during World War II planned by Adolf Hitler.

Why did getting other countries to continue admitting Germany's Jews become an issue?

Because the word "continue" doesn't apply. They weren't admitting Jews in the 1930s-40s, period.

Until the First World War, there wasn't so great of a problem with immigration; but there was also not that much motivation for mass movement of Jewish populations, since anti-Semitism was relatively static, ubiquitous, and low-level (with the exception of Russia). But by the time the 1930s had arrived, with the sudden spike in hatred of Jews by Germany, nationalism and border-control had also spiked, and people were suddenly unable to immigrate freely to the various destinations. America (for example), which had accepted 1,800,000 Jews before WW1, suddenly made a drastic reduction in the numbers permitted to arrive there. The same thing happened (for other reasons) in the British Mandate in Israel (Palestine). The only place in the world to which Jews could enter uninhibited was Shanghai; and about 25,000 did so, despite the vast distance and the hardships involved. Even there, the Nazis badgered their Japanese allies to kill the new Jewish community.

Another point is that no one predicted that the Nazis would overrun all of Europe; so that Jews who did move out of Germany were killed anyway.

Also, the Nazis used a tactic of deception, right up to and including the last few minutes in the gas chambers which were presented as showers. Very few people were aware of what the Nazis were perpetrating. What was happening was unprecedented and inconceivable even as it was going on.

Why didn't the Jews have freedom of speech in the holocaust?

Not only didn't the Jews, citizens that were neutral in politics also had no freedom of speech.

"First they came for the Communists but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out;

Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists but I was not one of them, so I did not speak out;

Then they came for the Jews but I was not Jewish so I did not speak out.

And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me."

Are there scholarships for descendents of holocaust survivors?

yes. But specifically for them would mean discrimination, something that caused the atmosphere that allowed the Holocaust to happen.

There are many organisations that have set up stipends for anyone wishing to study the Holocaust. But the idea that someone would want to cash in on the tragedy that happened to their parents is morally questionable.

What country do Jews worship?

Jews do not worship any specific country or land. They worship God.

However, Jews believe that God promised them the Land of Israel which is currently part of the State of Israel, the Palestinian Territories and extends a little bit into Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon.

Do atheists have any rituals?

Atheists have no religious rituals, since they have no religion, and religious rituals are usually dedicated to a god, or to that religion's beliefs (ex. praying, hymns, sacrifices, etc.).

Rituals are just sets of actions that have some symbolic meaning, or that one does systematically for whatever reason that they may have.

Answer

As said above, there are no religious rituals. Atheists can still have secular ones though.

Atheists can still have marriage ceremonies and just us a friend as the orator to say similar things: "We gather here to witness the joining of two people in marriage who love each other with all their hearts..." They have readings, but instead of the Bible they use other sources like books of poetry. They can give vows. It's much the same, just God is taken out of it.

Similar things are done with burials... a place is rented for a wake, friends speak about the person, favorite music is played, readings from favorite books, and they are buried in the earth. It's just done without invoking God.

The closest thing to a "religious" ritual is more of a mockery of one called a "de-baptism" which uses blow-dryers, but it is in no way manditory, unlike Christian religions which require the Sacraments.

Answer

There is no "system" of atheistic belief: no rituals, no practices, no rules, no set of doctrines or dogma.

What was the fate of communists in Nazi Germany?

Germany was a civilian run dictatorship. Civil liberties for the masses were non existent.

The press and radio were censored and otherwise controlled. Free speech was not allowed. Of course, Jews (and Jehova's witnesses) were not allowed to practice their religion, although otherwise, religious freedom was allowed. Freedom from random searches, freedom of assembly, and other American civil liberties were also denied.

This said, compared to the Soviet Union, Germany was a model of civil liberties. At least the rule of law applied to most citizens in Germany. There were honest trials for criminal matters. Private property was in the vast majority of cases, protected.

In the USSR even these few rights were stripped from society. All property right down to the smallest garden plot was state owned. Every cow, every auto, every apartment - all state owned. Religion was suppressed with churches bulldozed, priests arrested and services broken up. Persons were arrested and sent to work camps for no reason other than to terrorize those left behind. The brutality of the Soviet military is well known and does not need repeating here.

Are there any pictures of brad kavanagh shirtless?

Sadly no. He's so... sexy. Hopefully there will be, I've heard he's been working out. He's buffer and cuter in House of Anubis Season 2: you can see his chest hair protruding through his shirt. He's got a lot of armpit hair, I've heard he likes wearing AXE body spray...

How does photorefractive keratectomy treat myopia?

The PRK procedure flattens the cornea by vaporizing small amounts of tissue from the cornea's surface. Photorefractive keratectomy can be used to treat mild to moderate forms of myopia.

How did Mother feel about living at Auschwitz in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas?

In Chapter 17 (entitled 'Mother gets her own way'), this is the conversation about Auschwitz that took place between Mother and Father that Bruno overheard. All rights go to David Fickling Books; I did not write the following conversation.

"It's horrible," Mother was saying. "Just horrible. I can't stand it anymore."

"We don't have any choice," said Father. "This is our assignment and-"

"No, this is your assignment," said Mother. "Your assignment, not ours. You stay if you want to."

"And what will people think," asked Father, "if I permit you and the children to return to Berlin without me? They will ask questions about my commitment to the work here."

"Work?" shouted Mother. "You call this work?"

Bruno didn't hear much more because the voices were getting closer to the door and there was always a chance that Mother would come storming out in search of medicinal sherry...Still, he had heard enough to know there was a chance they might be returning to Berlin.

What was some odd behavior between Jewish people and ss soldiers during the holocaust?

The SS soldiers murdered the Jewish people for no legitimate reason.

Isn't that odd?

Because of the amount of dominance that SS Officers had over the Jews, basically being the arbiters of life and death, there were all kinds of behaviors that Jews were induced to perform to save their lives. These behaviors ranged from submitting to rape and/or medical experimentation at one end - acts of complete helplessness and shame, to serving on counsels like the Judenrat, which was a committee which would (amongst other things) provide SS Officers with lists for Jewish deportations from the ghettos to the camps - acts of complicity with the Nazi machine. Some Rabbis were also placed in charge of marking and dating Jewish artifacts, with the intent that when all of the Jews had been exterminated that the Nazis would have a "Jewish Museum" showcasing the "evil people" and their customs. Those Rabbis found themselves in a difficult place sifting through Jewish holy items whose owners were likely dead or suffering. Finally, Jews were often in charge of Death Camp maintenance, with the most famous group being the Sunderkommandos, those Jews required to operate the crematoria which burned the dead remains of their fellow Jews. Failure to perform the tasks given led to execution.

Why were Jews mistreated in the Holocaust?

Hitler belived that Germans were the superior to any other person. He hated any other person diffrent then them.

Why did Hitler target the Jews and other minorities?

It is hard to convince people that the failures of any given society are a reflection of their failures as a collective. It is much easier to fault minorities and other groups for being a "thorn" in the side of the proper and correct people. Additionally, Hitler targeted many of his political rivals to avoid having to fight for reelection.

What direction does the body of a Jew face when buried?

I am unaware of any specific tradition or ritual concerning this. Certainly monuments in even the most conservative of Jewish cemeteries are placed in many directions. Presumably the deceased is placed similarly.

It is true that as a tradition, anything to do with being closer to the east, the direction Jerusalem would normally be considered an honor. (As in seats by the eastern wall of a Temple are of a higher stature)...the Torah would be that way, etc. I don't think it is an actual scriptual rule of the religion however.

Answer

Most Jewish cemeteries are set up so that the feet of the dead point toward Jerusalem.

What does the phrase a picture is worth a thousand words have to do with the Holocaust?

Haven't you ever seen a picture of a concentration camp? A picture of the survivors is worth a thousand words of description.

A picture of the ones who were killed is also "worth a thousand words." See link below. May it never happen again.

Did Hitler's people approve of him?

They thought Hitler was trying to rebuild the nation so yes many of them did approve of him. The Nazis were basically brainwashed in the process. Many who served to fight under the Nazi Army didn't know about the Extermination camps. They were lured in by his speeches and his public appearances. They were brain washed with false information.

What was the Diet of Jewish people during the Holocaust?

This isn't exactly accurate but I read an interview from a Holocaust survivor that said they ate "soup" that continued to be watered down. He commented on the the cautious excitement when somebody would find a potato (although 9 times out of 10 it was a raw, leathery potato with sprouts beginning to emerge). I know that in certain places, I'm not entirely sure where exactly, they (the Nazis) kept the prisoners' calorie intake to an atrociously restricted 190 per day.

How did the holocaust destroy families?

It would destroy Jewish families, Gypsy families, people with homosextuals, and other types of people because the Nazi would murder them, take them to concentration camps, and tear families apart from one another... somtimes forever.

Was Ilya Ehrenburg the first to say Germany killed six million Jews?

No. The figure of six million first appeared in the public domain in Hoettl's affidavit to the Nuremberg Tribunal (November 1945). He ascribed the figure to Eichmann.

What would hitler do to the germans who wanted stand up for the jews?

Hitler ordered that any Jew-sympathizers would be treated the same way as the Jews and sent them off to Concentration Camps.

Why were Jews not welcome in Germany?

If you have a look in history, Jews always had problems to live in any places in the "old" Europe in peace. They were always blamed when something went wrong.

Why do they call some things art when its just scribbles and marks and some other stuff that's kinda dumb Then they sell it for a million dollars or something It makes no sense?

I completely agree, but neither of us would be considered to be appreciative of fine art.

AnswerI agree with you as well, but 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder.' Over 20 years ago two young men played a joke (not thinking it would go anywhere in the art world) and got chickens, dipped their feet in paint and let them run across the canvas. They framed the canvas and lo and behold it ended up in an art museum and that's when these two young men dropped the bomb! It was an embarrassment to the art world.

It's an individuals choice to decide what they feel art is. Although they may look at modern art and see this and that in the painting that's half the fun. 10 people in one room could get different vibes off the painting. Then there are the so-called art lovers who feel if it's weird it's got to be great. I had a friend that had a painting that had 4 lines, a couple of dots on it and it was suppose to represent the universe. Excuse me! LOL Of course I didn't tell my friend what I thought of their art and that I felt they had been royally shafted paying some $45,000 for this mess.

Another answer:

What art I enjoy is importatnt only to me. What you enjoy is up to you.

When you say (in your question) 'they sell it for...'.

They can't sell it if nobody enjoys it. The person who buys a piece of art has found something in it which is worth the price. If you do not like it is of no consequence.
