Why should Hitler have not killed Jews?

Answer Mussolini had many faults but he had one good attribute; he did not buy into the German philosophy of the great Aryan race and the final solution to execute the Jews. It wasn't until after he began to lose power in Italy and after he became a puppet of the German forces that Jews in Italy were sent off to concentration camps.

Why would concentration camp prisoners behave abusively to one another?

Well the Germans who ran them just plain hated the Jews. They thought all their troubles were originated from the Jewish people. So then they made them work, put them in gas chambers, and tortured them.

What happened to Margot Frank?

Margot and her sister Anne died of typus in March 1945 (exact day unknown) in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

Margot Frank was Anne Franks sister and they didn't get along at first (Anne called Margot a goody-goody at first) but then they become really close. Margot was kind of the "voice of reason" in a way because Anne was a joker and she was impatient... that's how I see it!
Margot Frank died of typhus in 1945

Did any countries do anything to help stop the events of the Holocaust?

No! The Holocaust was well hidden from the world, and when word did get out most countries couldn't fathom that such atrocities could exist and it took them a time to let it sink in. Yes, Britain, U.S. and Canada to name a few liberated the Jewish people. Let us not forget there were Gypsies, Poles, etc., in those concentration camps as well and not all German people were under Hitler's rule. One thing we must remember during wartime is that propoganda flies high and I do believe that other countries felt this was the case until it was proved otherwise. Marcy

What experiments did Mendel do during the Holocaust?

None. Gregor Mendel lived in the 19th century and, working mainly with peas, developed the laws of heredity.

You are probably thinking of Joseph Mengele. He did really horrific things. He injected people with gasoline and kerosene to see what the effects were. He injected blue dye into peoples eyes to see if it would make them "more aryan". He subjected people to terrible tortures and deprevations just to see what they could stand. He sewed children together, and I mean through the flesh, so he could see what Siamese twins were like. He was truly a monster. Michael Montagne

How did fascist philosophies contribute to the Holocaust?

Fascism's commitment to nationalism led many Germans to believe that Jews had no place in German society.

Where did Jews go to be safe when Hitler was ruler?

Some places were Britain, Palestine(later known as Israel),and another place was France.

___

Refugees from Nazi Germany were not able to pick and chose. Practically all countries had strict controls on immigration, and these were rigorously enforced. At the time, very few countries (if any) had a legally enshrined right to asylum.

Many Jews fled to neighbouring countries, such as France, Belgium and the Netherlands. In those cases they again came under Nazi control when these countries were invaded ... Some fled to Switzerland, but the Swiss authorities were cautious.

The favoured destination of many German Jews was the U.S. but there were strict quotas. Nevertheless, between 1933 and 1941 the U.S admitted about 250,000 refugees from Germany and Austria.

Other countries where refugees, both Jewish and non-Jewish, migrated to included:

  • Britain (71,000)
  • Australia (50,000)
  • Argentina (until 1938, when the government banned further immigration)
  • The Soviet Union (mainly for active Communists - admitted about 250,000 refugees, Jewish and non-Jewish, from Nazi Germany)
  • City of Shanghai, China (under Japanese rule - admitted about 25,000)
  • South Africa (until 1935 only, when a ban was introduced)
  • Palestine (but strict quotas)
  • US - (250,000 - see above)
  • Canada (admitted only 8,000 refugees)
  • Turkey admitted about ... 1,000

What is the significance of the Holocaust in Judaism?

To prove to the world what human beings are capable of. The mass murder of a people in unacceptable. Hitler was a nutcase. __ It is tempting to 'medicalize' evil, but there is no evidence that Hitler was mentally ill.

What did Auschwitz look like before the Holocaust?

There are actually two prison camps- Auschwitz 1 and Auschwitz Birkenau.

Auschwitz 1 was formally a soldier barracks, and so looks mildly 'normal' it has rows of houses, streets etc but with walls, barbed wire and towers. However, there is a gas chamber there which is rather horrific.

Auschwitz Birkenau was the larger, purpose built camp- it is unbelievably massive. You enter through the main gates and their are literally sheds as far as the eye can see. Blown up gas chambers at the end from where the Germans attempted to hide the evidence.

Why did some people wear striped pajamas at Auschwitz?

There was at one time a custom of making prisoners wear striped clothing so that if they were to escape the prison, they could be more easily identified as escaped prisoners (at least until such time as they had a chance to get some new clothing). Even though inmates of concentration camps had not committed any crime and had not been convicted of anything, they were still prisoners, and so this was done it make it harder for them to successfully escape.

How did some jews survive the war holocaust?

Some were forced to work and as long as they were able to perform their jobs they lived. Others were just lucky enough to not have their numbers called. NAZI's were killing as fast as they could but it took time and the unlucky ones were murdered before the Allies were able to stop the killing. Most of the ones who survived were just lucky. A very small number of Jews were used for office work in some camps - jobs such as sorting and listing valuables seized from new arrivals. Although they were fed miserable rations, the work was less strenuous than, for example, quarrying. Also those sent to the camps very late in the war stood a better chance of survival than others, provided they were 'selected' for work and not sent straight to the gas chambers. Psychological resilience may have helped some. However, as already stated, even these prisoners needed good luck. No amount of resilience could help against the outbreaks of disease that swept through many of the camps.

How can you write to the holocaust survivors?

Waht you feel is the right thing, attempt not to go into detail of what you have learned about the Holocaust, it might bring back horrible memories. But make it ver clear how you respect him/her.

What part of the body were the Jews tattooed on during the Holocaust?

No, those who went straight to the gas chambers did not get a tattoo. However, all that were taken into the camps like Auschwitz had to have a tattoo put on their arm or chest.

Why is the title Night significant?

Many times in the book, the most terrible or significant things happen during night time. It is night when they were first told about the deportation of the Jews, it was night when they arrived in Auschwitz, and it was night when they ran over 50 miles to Buna. In the beginning of the bible, the earth is dark. Then God creates light. The world in darkness is signifying a world with out God. God created light, so light is present, so is God. When it is dark, God isn't there. Partially because of this, Elie struggles to maintain faith in his God. He doubts God's presence, benevolence, and even existence because of how they are treated in the camps. God surly would have stopped that.

This is just what I learned in my English class but I believe a better answer can be found if you visit the sparknotes website:

Is Racism against blacks worse than the German holocaust?

It is far worse, because it is murder. On the other hand, racism is an attitude, a way of thinking and a way of behaving. This thinking & behavior is generally first revealed in speech (rudeness, harsh or insulting words, etc). Racist thinking & speech does not always lead to violence or even murder. Only a very few people are willing to go as far as violence.

The genocide of Jews by Nazi Germany is by far much worse because it was an organized & funded program to exterminate millions of Jews based solely on their ethnicity.

How did Saint Edith Stein die?

We don't have an exact account of the martyrdom of Edith Stein in Auschwitz but we can make a few conclusions from her writings when the Anti-Semitism of the Nazi regime was waging and from eyewitness account of her journey to Auschwitz. However, there is sufficient reason to believe that she was killed in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau (as was practiced in that concentration camp at the time of her alleged "extermination").

However, aside from that final moment of her martyrdom, her way of the cross started earlier on. Let me just enumerate a few without going into details:

1.) Due to the Anti-Semitism of the the Nazi regime, she had to give up her academic career (although she was able to continue writing and this eventually led to her entrance to Carmel).

2.) As a Jewess, she closely identified herself with "her people" -- their suffering were hers too, as we can induce from her words to her sister, Rosa, as she was leaving Echt Carmel: "Come, let us go for the sake of our people". She had previously written a request to her superior to be able to make a self-offering for the sake of her people. Her writings also show her growing understanding of the identification of her fate with that of her people.

3.) Her suffering took the form of a moral torture. She endured the inhumane treatment of the Nazi guards, the overpowering feeling of hopelessness in the concentration camp, the inhuman conditions of the train carts that transported her from Echt to Westerbork, and finally to Auschwitz-Birkenau. She underwent the humiliating "physical examinations" in the camp.
