Why waste money by helping the homeless?

Homelessness is mostly caused by mental illness. There are other reasons too, of course, but mental illness is a primary reason. Mental illness is as valid an illness as is cancer or heart disease. It is not the fault of the ill person that they have a mental illness and they should not be discriminated against any more than someone with diabetes or cancer.

Now assisting homeless people is an act of charity just as if you were to sponsor a needy child overseas. Acts of compassion are rarely looked upon as being a waste. It may be more worthwhile to give money to an organized charity that assists the needy instead of directly giving a homeless person money out of your pocket.

Another option might be to sponsor research into mental health treatments that can help homeless people in the long term with new treatments or clinics.

BELOW IS AN ADDITION:

In some cases maybe it is a waste of money; many homeless are using the money that we give them to drink and use drugs. But then there are thousands upon thousands who are homeless, due to no fault of their own. They have lost their job, and unable to obtain a new job they have lost more; they have lost their homes. Can you imagine how much harder it is to find a job when you have no place to live. Anyway, they have no way to keep their clothing, to wash, dry and iron cloths, no way to stay clean, to wash their hair, to shave, apply make-up all the things needed to impress an employer. Without a permanent address or phone there is no way to find out if there is a job offer; except showing up and asking if there is an employment offer, which can prove embarrassing, and is not generally socially accepted. In many cases, they cannot get food stamps without an address, although some states are becoming a bit more lenient in this regulation.

The homeless are not homeless by choice, even those who drink and do drugs, don't choose to be homeless. And it is not just adults who are homeless, there are homeless children too. Some are homeless due to mental illness, or they have become mentally unstable due to being homeless. They have no place to stay warm, to fix food, to wash themselves or their clothing. There are so many homeless people, that the shelters are full, which leaves the unlucky sleeping under freeway overpasses, railroad bridges, trees, cardboard boxes, wood pallets with tarps over them, abandoned houses … any place where they can find some form of cover. They are often wet, cold, frost bit ... in the winter, and sun burned, dehydrated … in the summer. They are hungry and tired, and always on the move, to find food and warmth. If they are lucky enough to have a car to sleep in, most cities' have laws that won't allow them to park on the street. Nor do they have to excess money for gas, so they can keep moving around; and not get caught parking where they are not suppose to be.

Now that there are so many people without jobs, the homeless population has grown. There are those who still have a home, but not a job; they are unable to help the homeless because they are struggling to keep themselves from becoming homeless too. Some of those with jobs have taken pay cuts or a cut in hours and their budget doesn't allow them to help the homeless.

Why do homeless have to sit on the street?

Try to imagine if you had nowhere to go, no relatives or friends to lend a sofa until you got back on your feet. This is the reality of thousands and possibly millions of people every day. Shelters fill up very fast, and it's usually first come, first serve. This leaves sleeping in parks, under bridges, doorways, sidewalks, alleys or wherever is available. But in most towns and cities there are anti-loitering laws which make it against the law to remain in certain places for extended periods of time. Police are bound by law to rouse the homeless and make them 'move on'.

Why did some homeless people chose to be homeless?

Not always, most homeless are homeless due to losing a job, not having money to continue on their rent and such. Some of these, though they did not choose to become homeless at first, become accustomed to the freedom of such a lifestyle and say they choose to stay homeless. There are a few though that did consciously choose to become homeless and love it. The range of homelessness goes from the stereotype homeless person with very little in the way of possessions up to people that live in RV's.

What do you do if you have nowhere to live?

If you are made homeless then I would have to say if you have no friends you can stay with for a little while then find homeless shelters in your area. Then you can go down to a health and human services office and apply for housing, food stamps if you have no job or low income. They will help you out to the best of their abilities espeacially if you are pretty much just living on the streets already.

What are three things that homeless people need?

That depends on their situation. Many homeless persons, after being subjected to a depressing state of mind, find themselves abusing illegal substances. So, if a person is on drugs... What does he want? Well, drugs. Now, I am not saying that all people who find themselves homeless will wind up on drugs. I am simply stating that it depends on their situation. If they have no where to go because they didn't pay their rent and were evicted; they will want money to pay rent. If they were kicked out of their house after their mortgage wasn't paid; they will want to get it paid. If they are homeless; they want food. If they want food they need money. It's a bad place to be but it's reality. The person may want to escape reality. They want drugs. It's a never ending process and that is why the status quo, at present, is flawed.

Why are homeless people so mean?

the homeless

many have been severely abused

and because they are homeless

the abuse dose not stop

now it's society and the government

abusing them

The longer they are homeless, the less they believe in other people's kindness.

They've been kicked, spat on, called names, and sneered at. Or simply being ignored by so many other humans can cause stress and depression.

Also there is research that says that the longer people are homeless, the more likely they are to start showing signs of psychological problems including schizophrenia. Their brains break down at the physical and chemical level and the mind starts to reflect this. Alcohol and drug abuse sometimes play a large role in this, as do poor nutrition.

What can you do to stop homeless people?

To be honest, no one can stop homeless people. People are getting more and more poor and homeless, living on the streets because our government, your president and my queen won't do anything about it. Though, what you could try, is when you see a beggar on the streets, give them a bit of money and a bit of food. You'll feel happy. To know that you've helped someone.

What do homeless people suffer from?

Yes, many homeless people suffer from mental illness and are on the streets or in shelters because they're unable to hold a job. Most are off medication and might function better if they were able to maintain contact with mental health professionals. In the past (prior to the late 1970s) these people would receive custodial care in state mental hospitals, but the deinstitutionalization movement and funding cuts for hospitals have left them without a stable support structure.

Be cautious about generalizing beliefs about mental illness to the entire homeless population, however. Other reasons for homelessness include unemployment, lack of affordable housing, general financial problems, family issues, drug and alcohol addiction, etc. For the majority of these people, homelessness is a temporary situation.
