How much does equine morality insurance cost?
Equine mortality insurance varies from state to state and even varies with different breeds of horses. For those who don't know this is just life insurance on a horse. It's been a few years since I have written this type of coverage but I remember the rates on Tennessee Walking Horses being 1.5% of the amount of insurance. At times some companies refuse to write certain breeds due to unscrupulous people actually killing horses to collect the insurance. The best thing to do is to look in to look in trade magazines for independent insurance agencies that more or less specialize in this type of coverage. If there are magazine dedicated to your particular breed of horse you should find several advertising. Good Luck.
As a matter of full disclosure, I own and operate a smalltown Independent Insurance Agency in Central Georgia and have for 23 years. I also worked as an agent for a direct writer for 3 years prior to that.

What does extremely cow-hocked and splay-footed mean?
This is in reference to poor bone structure in the rear legs of a horse, bovine, sheep, or goat. Cow-hocked is in reference to the hocks (the back leg joint above the lower leg bone) that are angled inwards towards each other instead of angling straight-on, which is what good and normal hind-leg structure is supposed to be. When an animal is cow-hocked this makes the back feet turn out or be splay-footed. When an animal is splay-footed, the hooves turn towards the outside of the animal's body instead of being normally straight towards the animal's head.
When an animal is extremely cow-hocked, it will have a lot of difficulty as it gets older, if it is forced to work hard or to travel long distances because the action of the feet having to swing outward can be quite hard on the pelvic structure and cause wear in places that there shouldn't be. As the animal gets older, this may result in an animal that has trouble being mobile or even getting around normally.
An animal that has this poor leg conformation will always be culled. With horses, care will have to be taken when riding it and caring for the feet. A farrier would probably fit a horse with such bad leg structure with special shoes to help it get around easier.
Are stomach pains and diarrhoea the main cause of horse mortality?
Stomach pains which are called colic in horses is a leading cause of death. Diarrhea tends to not be too much of a problem until the horse becomes dehydrated. At the first signs of colic a equine vet should be called, which can save the horses life. If a horse is experiences an episode of diarrhea, then you should investigate the cause and possibly call the vet if is persists for more than a day. The vet can administer fluids and possibly a stomach aid to help solidify the manure.
How do you remove your horse's saddle?
Ok, this is going to be a bit confusing, but try to bear with me...
Ok, on in English saddle you are going to lift up the leather underneath the left stirrup leather. You should see 2 to 3 buckles depending on the type of saddle/cinch. All you need to do is pull up on the strap that's doing through the buckle and pull the metal bar (on the buckle) down. Do this for the second and third straps. Viola! Your done!! All you need to do now is Put the cinch on top of the saddle, grab the saddle and pad firmly in the front of the saddle, using your left hand, and the back of the saddle, using your left hand. Pull the saddle off the horses left side and Your done!!
In a western saddle the process is slightly diffrent. Take the left stirrup and hook it on the horn. This will make it much easier to access the girth. You should see a long leather or cloth strap.
If it looks like a tie, all you need to do is follow the strap through the center of the knot, back around the right side of the D ring, and through the left side. At this point, the strap should just be going though the D ring and the cinch. Pull the strap until its loose. Then, once the saddle is loose, grab the strap at the middle and loop it back through the D ring, go over to the other side of the horse and pull the cinch back over the top of the saddle. Then go back to the left side of the horse, and pull the saddle and pad off.
If it just looks like a buckle then just un loop it from the side ring, take the strap through the D ring, then un loop it from the cinch until the metal that goes through the hole is exposed. Then as if you were tightening the saddle, pull up, pull the metal bar out of the hole and continue until loose.
Sorry I hope that wasnt too confusing!! If you have anymore questions about horses, just post them no my board.

When you turn out a horse or pony to give them a break/holiday for a certain amount of time
A geriatric horse, is an elderly horse. The joints of the horse will start to get puffy, and circulation will become less, since the heart grows weaker with age. This stage of a horse's life begins in the horse's late teens or early twenties (which is around 60 to 70 years of age equivalent in humans). A horse's back will begin to sag, making it look quite sway-backed, and many develop age-related disorders such as kidney and liver disease. In the wild, these conditions contribute to rapid deterioration and death. A wild geriatric horse in the wild is one that is most likely to be hunted and killed by predators like wolves, bears and mountain lions.

The Bureau of Land Management and The US Forest Service administer Mustang Adoption Services, which sadly remove the wild mustangs from the wild lands they were supposed to insure they would still be able to roam! Now, we as a country will cause another extinction!
