Humanism

Christianity and humanism are diabolically opposed to each other. Humanism basically means doing what seems and feels right. Christianity is dying to self and following Christ and his commandments fully. Due to them being diabolically opposed, authentic Christian humanism" is an oxymoron. Still, the reference to Christian humanism refers to placing emphasis on the humanity of Jesus and his social teachings, as well as synthesizing human spirituality and materialism. It can be viewed as a philosophical union of Christian ethics and humanist principles.

But really: The Bible doesn't say anything about Humanism. This philosophy was invented after the Bible was completed and the canon was closed. There is a lot in the Bible, however, about the attitude of humanism. From the very beginning, humans have entertained themselves with the notion that they are the measure of all things: the mind is the determiner of Truth, the sense of justice is spelled out in elevating the downtrodden and treading down the elevated, that "I am the master of my fate and the captian of my soul." This is humanism. And the Bible says we had better hope not! Because if that is true, then we don't stand a chance in this world.

In truth, only God is able to look at the heart, which makes Him alone perfectly just and perfectly merciful. Humans can only look at outward appearances and judge on what may or may not be the truth of the matter. Someone may do the right thing for the wrong reasons, and another may do the wrong thing for the right reasons. Only God can judge what that person was trying to accomplish.

Humanism wants to enjoy the benefits of Christian faith without making the commitment to Christ that is necessary to have those benefits. That's been the story of fallen humanity from the very beginning.

Humanism was a change from Medieval times because it helped create better well rounded people... It stressed the study of classical subjects such as:

which made more subjects and a better well rounded community.

A major characteristic of Humanism in Europe is an appreciation for the basic work of individual achievement.

A historical period, or era as it's sometimes called, is a period of time that is readily identifiable by particular things, events and or persons that happened or existed during that time.

In the context of 'Books and Literature,' a 'major symbol' refers to an image used in a literary work that is very important for the work's theme or purpose. Whether it is an object, a living thing, a natural feature, or even an idea, the symbol will be vitally important for the action and/or meaning of the work as a whole.

During the renaissance age, people's worldview began to shift. They began to believe in the power of the human being, and how the human being can do things on his own without divine intervention. They saw the world as something to discover, and began to find things out for themselves. The world was a new and interesting place, and they saw that they had a role in it. This idea in itself, the power of the human being, is the basis of the humanist ideals. The worldview of the renaissance age was, for the most part, a humanistic worldview, which sparked so many great things, along with our modern age.

Philosophy works written by the Ancient Greek philosopher Plato. Plato was the student of Socrates and the teacher of Aristotle. Some famous works are: The Republic; The Apology Platonic philosophy is considered largely humanistic and was widely read during the Italian Renaissance.

Stated philosophically, it warns against absolutizing the relative. Stated theologically, it warns against idolatry.

Human allegiance belongs to God. God is beyond nature and history and cannot be equated with either of them or any of their parts. God is the only thing infinite while the world or anything perceivable is finite. In the name of the sovereign God, who transcends all the limitations and distortions of the finite existence, every human claim to absolute truth or finality must be rejected.

Protestants admit that the tendency to absolutize the relative is universal. The chief protestant idolatry has been bibliolatry. Protestants do believe that God speaks to people through the Bible as in no other way. But to elevate the Bible as a book to a point above criticism, to insist that every word and letter was dictated directly by God and so can contain no historical, scientific, or other inaccuracies, is to forget that in entering the world, God's word must speak through human minds that is limited in capacity.

Italian Renaissance humanism emphasized the worth and potential of the individual, promoting the idea that people could play an active role in shaping their own lives and society. This led to a shift in focus from the collective to the individual, empowering people to pursue knowledge, personal growth, and self-expression. Humanism also encouraged critical thinking and a reevaluation of traditional social hierarchies, ultimately laying the foundation for modern concepts of individual rights and freedoms.
