In the conductive region pathogens are caught in mucus lining the inner surface. On the surface of the epithelia of the conductive region are so-called cilia, which are brush-like structures. These cilia will move the trapped pathogens upwards towards the pharynx, where it will be swallowed and eventually digested in the stomach.
In the respiratory region, however, there are no cilias. Instead pathogens are removed by alveolar macrophages (specialized immune-cells that digest pathogens). The macrophages can be found in the mucus lining the respiratory region.
The macrophages can travel two ways:
- to the conductive area, where cilias are present, and hereafter to the pharynx and stomach.
- they can wander through the alveolar epithelia towards the connecting tissue of the lungs. Here most are removed via lymfatic vessels to the lymphnodes of the region.

You really don't have nose cilia; you have nasal hairs that act as a trap for things you breathe in.
If anything gets past them, they will then meet the cilia. Their job is to move the mucus that your tract makes. The mucous gets embedded with these particles. The cilia then move the mucus and particles up and out.
You swallow these and your stomach acids destroy all of it. The cilia are like a janitor who always sweeps up the messes. If these are destroyed (smoking), the whole thing comes to a halt, and you then have to try to cough and pull up this now thickened mess.

Atypical lymphocytes - are caused by viral infections, may be noted in lymphocytic leukemia, and may be seen in allergies.
Ovalocytes are typically seen in cases of low hemoglobin or red blood cells counts, ie anemia. Sometimes even a slight decrease in rbc counts may cause a few ovalocytes to be seen.
Sometimes the lab tech reads the smear too closely noteing any ovalocyte or atypical lymph seen but the numbers are not actually a high enough percentage to be considered abnormal.

After we are exposed to those antigens, our body also makes "memory" cells (B cells), so that if we are exposed to the same antigen later in life, our body will "remember" how it fought them off the first time and respond quickly to remove them.
