What is the average cost to install tile?

It varies greatly from product to product and from market

to market. The best way to get an answer is to put an ad on Craigslist

telling what you want installed, ie..

12' porcelain tile overwood subfloor,

new construction, 400 sq feet.

The lesson here is that the more detail you put in the ad, the better the quote.. You will have to understand that not every installer has Golden Hands, some are thieves & butchers, so you may not always want the low bidder..

How do you remove a trash compactor that is stuck because it was installed before counter and hardwood floor?

Remove the counter.

Counters are usually installed with just a few screws, and the arborite is easy to get out. You'll likely have to re-caulk the edges, but that's going to be a LOT easier than trying to remove parts of the hardwood floor.

If the countertops are granite, hire a contractor. The stone is very heavy and is likely to break when you lift it out.

24 inches goes how many times into 135sqft?

Let's see. This is a math question, not a question of interior design. The first question is; are you using 24 square inches to divide into 135 sq ft.? Otherwise, it is like dividing apples by oranges. If they are square inches, you can convert the square feet to square inches, or the square inches to square feet and then divide. There are 144 square inches in a square foot.

Does brushed nickel and brushed silver match as bathroom fixtures?

No. While their color is silver metallic, they are not the same looking. Brushed nickel has a much softer "deeper' sense to it and more of a grey color. Brushed silver will maintain more of a shine. For an example, you only need to look at your change. A nickel has a softer look than even an old dime. If you really want them to look like they match, you are going to have to use all brushed silver or all brushed nickel, because they just look different. Would I use them together? Not if I could get by without it.

Why do windows in American houses have those white strips It blocks the line of view and makes the windows look small?

The white strips you are referring to are called mullions (vertical) and transoms (horizontal). In older windows, the panes of glass were smaller, because there were not simple and cheap methods to manufacture and support large panes of glass. To make windows that were larger than the individual panes of glass they were grouped in a larger frame or sash, and separated by mullions and transoms.
Some modern buildings use small panes of glass to copy older style buildings, and because it is now cheaper and more efficient to produce larger windows, sometimes fake mullions and transoms are stuck onto windows to copy the older look. Real mullions and transoms can add strength, support and security, but not if they are thin and small. Fake mullions and transoms add nothing, and arguably detract from the appearance as well.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of an open floor plan in the kitchen and dinning area?

I will restate this question. ORIGINAL QUESTION: Should you make your kitchen and living room open plan? NEW QUESTION: What are the advantages and disadvantages of an open floor plan in the kitchen and livingroom area? The reason for this change is that one style over another is strictly a matter of preference or desire over need and function. For instance, an open floor plan allows the mother to keep an eye on an infant in the family room. It also allows the teenage gamming on the tv to travel uninhibited throughout the open area. So look at the needs and the desires. List the advantages and disadvantages on paper. Then you can choose based on your needs and desires what will work best for you. Hope this helps and that others will chime in here. Terry

What would the scale have to be for 2 inches to equal 14 feet?

First we have two different units of measure, inches and feet. In order to make this work you must first get to two equal units of measure. For this exercise we will use inches. We already have 2 inches, so we need to convert feet to inches. 14 feet is equal to 168 inches. So 2 inches is equal to 168 inches. We now need to get this to its lowest common denominator 2 divided by 2 is 1 168 divided by 2 is 84 So 1 inch equals 84 inches or 1/84 scale. Hope this helps Terry
