21,950 Questions

When Muslims take over territory did they allow religious toleration?

Answer 1

Yes, Muslim leaders were tolerant of those they conquered because Muslim leaders were not seeking power or wealth or oppression. They were seeking only to free the will of the people to allow them to select freely their faith without any compulsion or aggression. Refer to questions below.

Answer 2

Muslim leaders have been different. you should specify. as an example when Muslims conquered Iran enforced Iranians to kill each other that is not an Islamic action.

Non-Muslim Answer

Muslims treated non-Muslims in a way that was superior to contemporaneous civilizations and introduced the concept of religious tolerance (as opposed to Europe which was practicing the exact opposite at the time). However, it is nothing close to the Muslim conception given above nor was it at all close to equality or Rights. An important thing to note is that the concept of Rights comes out the Enlightenment. Prior to this point, there was a system of privilege wherein the Ruler would provide privileges (out of the kindness of his heart) to a certain group of people to do acts. A person did not have the "right" to anything and this was the mentality worldwide.

The Muslim opinion touches on the Pact of Omar, which was a document of submission signed by the Caliph Omar and defeated Christians and Jews during one of Omar's Wars. While the factual accuracy of that story may be doubted, there is no doubt that the Pact of Omar formed the basis for the treatment of non-Muslims in the conquered territories. The Pact of Omar set out a number of regulations that will be described in this answer.

The Dhimmi, or non-Muslim under Muslim occupation was required by the Pact of Omar to pay a number of taxes that were connected with his Dhimmi status. The most famous was the jizya, which was a tax that Dhimmi had to pay for Muslims for the right to not be killed where they stood for not acknowledging Mohammed's Prophecy; it was a form of humiliation. Additional taxes included the kharaj, which was a tax on non-Muslim land-holdings in the Muslim World. The kharaj was so untenable that most Dhimmi were forced to live in the cities where the tax would not be applicable. The above answer is also incorrect as concerns justice. On paper, a Christian or Jew could testify against a Muslim, but in reality, such testimony was not acceptable and the attempt to defame a Muslim would receive retribution. Christians and Jews were not allowed to build new houses of worship, restore old houses of worship, proselytize in any way (this included religious debate or dialogue), or allow wine or pigs to be shown in public.

Polytheists were forced to convert to Islam with some rare exceptions (such as the Hindus in India). Zoroastrianism was the majority faith in Iran until Islam almost completely extinguished it, both by sword, economic inequality, and brutal repression of Zoroastrian customs (unless they could be Islamicized like Nourouz).

When was Islam started and who started it?

Islam started by start of universe creation as Islam in its universal sense and objectives is the full submission and surrender to God. So all God creatures are created on the principle of Islam (full submission to God). Islam per God Torah revelation to Moses is called Judaism. Islam per Bible revelation to Jesus is called Chritianity. Islam per God Quran revelation to Muhammad is called the same name Islam.

Islam per God Quran revelation to prophet Muhammad (PBUH) started by start of Quran revelation in year 610 AD to prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Makkah (Mecca) in Saudi Arabia.

Why do Muslims walk counter clockwise seven times about the Kaaba?

The Hajj is a pilgramage to Mecca (The holy city of Islam) and is one of hte 5 pillars of Islam.

Muslims must complete this pilgramage at least once in their life if they are physically and financially able.

in the question you state "go round the hajj"

by this i assume you are refering to the Ka'ba, a black building with a sacred stone on one corner. During the hajj, Muslims will circle this building 7 times and either kiss, touche or salute the stone, as it is said to be the only remaining piece of the original building made by Abraham and his sons.

this circling of hte ka'ba 7 times occurs to signify the unified 'being' of all Muslims.

the Hajj itself is a much more complex topic but i will not delve further as yet.

When is the weekly communalworship day of Islam?

Muslims do not worship a certain day of the week as they only acknowledge an extemporaneous God. As for the days upon which a Muslim will worship, Muslims worship every day on the week, but have an extended communal prayer on Friday Afternoon.

How did muhammed receive the source of Islamic teachings?

an angel was sent to Prophet Muhammed witch was named jebreel PBUH by Allah that told him the quran content.(The Quran is Allah's words)

AnswerThe Revelation of the book Quran Started around the year 610 CE at Ghaar-e-Hiraa (The Cave of Hiraa) when Muhammad (peace be upon him) was praying to GOD, God's Angel Gabriel took the message of God to Muhammad and told him to read, Muhammad replied that he didn't know how to read so he squeezed him in his arms and ask him again to read. it happens like this for three times, than the first word that was reveled in quran was "Iqra" means "Read" .

In 622 CE, he left Mecca with his followers (due to sufferings in Mecca and being subject to assassination plot) to a city in the north named Yathrib (later Medina), where another Muslim community had begun to grow. The date of this emigration. Thee year 622 CE, is the beginning year for the Muslim calendar.

Revelation of Quran to Mohamed continued until his death in year 632 CE.

Note: Name Muhammad may be spelled as Mohamed or Muhammed or Mohammad

What was the Mongols impact on the Islamic world?

The Mongol conquest of Russia reduced the Russian princes to tribute-payers. Payments fell heavily on the peasants, who found themselves reduced to serfdom. Until the mid- nineteenth century, serfdom was typical of Russian agricultural labor. Some Russian cities, such as Moscow, recovered their fortunes by the increased trade the Mongol empire permitted. After 1328, Moscow also profited by serving as the tribute collector for the Mongol overlords. The head of the Orthodox Church in Russia selected Moscow as his capital. In 1380, the princes of Moscow turned against the Mongols and led an alliance of Russian forces that defeated the Mongols at the battle of Kulikova. The victory broke the hold of the Mongols on Russia, although the nomads continued to make raids into the fifteenth century. The Mongol conquest of Russia ensured the central position of Moscow and the Orthodox Church, led to changes in Russian military organization, and revised the political concepts of Russian rulers. The period of Mongol dominance also cut Russia off from western Europe both politically and culturally. The conquest of the Muslim heartlands of the Middle East fell to Hulegu, another grandson of Chinggis Khan. In 1258, the Mongols captured and destroyed Baghdad, killing the last of the Abbasid caliphs. The Mongol invasion and the consequent destruction of many cities destroyed the focal points of Islamic culture. Without a central administration, the regional Muslim commanders suffered repeated defeats. Only in 1260 did the Mamluk army of Egypt defeat the Mongols at Ain Jalut. Baibars, the Mamluk general, was able to hold off further Mongol invasions. Lack of unity among the Mongol hordes also caused Hulegu to end his assault on Islamic territories.

The Mongols established a central code of laws and policies.

Can a virgin man get married to a non virgin woman?

I assume that by non-virgin woman is meant a widow or a divorced woman because, in Islam, it is strictly forbidden to practice intercourse without marriage. Doing sex without marriage is a big sin in Islam.

So, sure for widow or divorced woman she can get married.

As for non-virgin woman without marriage, first she:

  • should admit that she is sinful in performing intercourse without marriage,
  • should intend not to do it again, and
  • should repent and ask God for forgiveness.
Then, God, the All-Merciful, may accept her repentance per His Will.

If a Muslim man feels that this non-virgin woman is serious in her repentance and if he feels that she indeed returned back to the right path of God, then if he marries her he will be rewarded, per God Will, for his good doing.

Why are Muslims evil?

Answer 1

Many people are influenced by the media into believing that all Muslims mean harm, and want to upset the peace. However Islam itself is a very peaceful religion that preaches love and respect for all. The small group of extremists that ruin this are pasted all over the headlines. The media implies that all Muslims follow suit, that they all act in the same destructive manner. Thankfully this is not true.

Many Muslims, the ones that follow the true teaching of Islam are pure of heart and abide by the law of their country, at the same time respecting their own Islamic teachings.

So to answer your question no, not all Muslims are bad just as not all Christians or Jews are bad. A stigma is attached to name of Islam which upsets people, almost frightens them.

Answer 2

One of the many short comings which has arisen in the West, is judging Islam by the conduct of a minority of its people. By doing this, segments of Western society have deliberately played off the desperate actions of many Muslims, and have given it the name of Islam. Such behaviour is clearly not objective and seeks to distort the reality of Islam. For if such a thing was done Judge a religion by the conduct of its people) then we too could say that all Christianity is about is child molesting and homosexuality By using the many cases of child abuse and homosexuality by priests, such a generalization about Christianity could be made as easily.

The right picture of lslam is conveyed in the Qur'an, which is exemplified by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The reality is that it is not fair to judge a religion by the actions of its followers alone because there are good and bad followers in every religion. The correct thing to do is to judge a religion by its documented revelation from God and the prophet who brought that revelation.

Christians and other religions can learn about Islam from Muslim sources and the basis of the Muslim belief and not rely on second hand information which in many cases is distorted or contains a deep seated anti Muslim agenda. This is indeed a more scholarly approach. Everyone should seek out information on the world about others beliefs

Answer 3

well, in my point of view, not all Muslims are bad, it is not the people that are bad, their god (allah) is supposedly our god, the christian god, or i could maybe be wrong, but the Muslim religion is a very very very very very dangerous one, it poisons your mind, when ever you go into one of the middle eastern countries, you MUST abide by their rules, where as, what I find unfair is that, whenever a Muslim immigrant or migrant comes over to one of the countries, such as the u.s.a, u.k, aus, and some parts of Europe, they are free to build mosques, wear the burqa, and sing their incredibly annoying chants that they do early in the morning, so i don't think all Muslims are bad, it's just the other way of life they have, it's the religion that is dodgy, (allah is supreme)

Answer 4

No. Most Muslims are quite decent human beings, who work hard to raise families that they love and cherish. The issue primarily comes from the way that Islam is still practiced in this day and age and how Muslims themselves are uncritical of the practices of their religion. Muslim leaders, even in Western countries, tend not to espouse Western values, such as seeking increased police protection for possible honor killing victims, seeking prohibition of female genital mutilation, and condoning the creation of "Shari'a Police" to enforce Islamic norms. The passivity of the majority of the Islamic community in regards to these actions is problematic, but does not make the people bad, only inactive. By contrast, in personal relationships, you will often find that Muslims are quite reasonable, funny, and "normal" people.

read the following verse from Allah as revealed in the Quran:

Who was Hazrat Nuh?

The Prophet Nuh and the Flood in the Qur'an

Nuh's Flood is mentioned in many verses of the Qur'an. Below are found the verse arranged according to the sequence of events;

In the Qur'an, it is clearly shown that it was not the whole world, but only Nuh's people who were destroyed. Just as Hud was sent only to 'Ad (Surah Hud: 50), Salih was sent to Thamud (Surah Hud: 61) and all the other prophet prior to Muhammad were sent only to their own peoples, Nuh was sent only to his people and the flood caused only Nuh's people to disappear;

We sent Nuh to his people (with a mission): "I have come to you with a Clear Warning: That ye serve none but Allah: Verily I do fear for you the penalty of a grievous day." (Surah Hud: 25-26)

Those who perished were people who totally disregarded Prophet Nuh's proclamation of the message and persisted on rebellion. Relevant verses are explicit enough to leave no room for discussion:

But they rejected him, and We delivered him, and those with him, in the Ark: but We overwhelmed in the flood those who rejected Our signs. They were indeed a blind people! (Surat al-Araf: 64)

We saved him and those who adhered to him. By Our mercy, and We cut off the roots of those who rejected Our signs and did not believe. (Surat al-Araf: 72)

The Prophet Nuh's Inviting His People to the Religion of truth

We sent Nuh to his people. He said: "O my people! worship Allah! ye have no other god but Him. I fear for you the punishment of a dreadful day!" (Surat al-Araf: 59)

(Nuh "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust: So fear Allah, and obey me. No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds: So fear Allah, and obey me." (Surat ash-Shuara: 107-110)

(Further, We sent a long line of prophets for your instruction). We sent Nuh to his people: He said, "O my people! worship Allah! Ye have no other god but Him. Will ye not fear (Him)?" (Surat al-Mumenoon: 23)

The Prophet Nuh's Warning His People Against the Punishment of Allah

We sent Nuh to his People (with the Command): "Do thou warn thy People before there comes to them a grievous Penalty." (Surah Nuh: 1)

(Nuh "But soon will ye know who it is on whom will descend a penalty that will cover them with shame - on whom will be unloosed a penalty lasting" (Surah Hud: 39)

(Nuh "That ye serve none but Allah: Verily I do fear for you the penalty of a grievous day." (Surah Hud: 26)

Denial of Nuh's People

The leaders of his people said: "Ah! we see thee evidently wandering (in mind)." (Surat al-Araf: 60)

They said: "O Nuh! thou hast disputed with us, and (much) hast thou prolonged the dispute with us: now bring upon us what thou threatenest us with, if thou speakest the truth!?" (Surah Hud: 32)

Forthwith he (starts) constructing the Ark: Every time that the chiefs of his people passed by him, they threw ridicule on him. He said: "If ye ridicule us now, we (in our turn) can look down on you with ridicule likewise!" (Surah Hud: 38)

The chiefs of the Unbelievers among his people said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: his wish is to assert his superiority over you: if Allah had wished (to send messengers), He could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a thing (as he says), among our ancestors of old." (And some said): "He is only a man possessed: wait (and have patience) with him for a time." (Surat al-Mumenoon: 24-25)

Before them the People of Nuh rejected (their messenger): they rejected Our servant, and said, "Here is one possessed!", and he was driven out. (Surat al-Qamar: 9)

Their Disregard of Those Who Followed the prophet Nuh

But the chiefs of the Unbelievers among his people said: "We see (in) thee nothing but a man like ourselves: Nor do we see that any follow thee but the meanest among us, in judgment immature: Nor do we see in you (all) any merit above us: in fact we think ye are liars!" (Surah Hud: 27)

They said: "Shall we believe in thee when it is the meanest that follow thee?" He said: "And what do I know as to what they do? Their account is only with my Lord, if ye could (but) understand. I am not one to drive away those who believe. I am sent only to warn plainly in public." (Surat ash-Shuara: 111-115)

Allah's Reminding Nuh Not to Grieve

It was revealed to Nuh: "None of thy people will believe except those who have believed already! So grieve no longer over their (evil) deeds." (Surah Hud, 36)

Prayers of the prophet Nuh

(Nuh "Judge Thou, then, between me and them openly, and deliver me and those of the Believers who are with me." (Surat ash-Shuara: 118)

Then he called on his Lord: "I am one overcome: do Thou then help (me)!" (Surat al-Qamar: 10)

(Nuh He said: "O my Lord! I have called to my People night and day: But my call only increases (their) flight (from the Right)." (Surah Nuh: 5-6)

(Nuh) said: "O my Lord! help me: for that they accuse me of falsehood!" (Surat al-Mumenoon: 26)

(In the days of old), Nuh cried to Us, and We are the best to hear prayer. (Surat as-Saaffat: 75)

The Construction of the Ark

But construct an Ark under Our eyes and Our inspiration, and address Me no (further) on behalf of those who are in sin: for they are about to be overwhelmed (in the Flood). (Surah Hud: 37)

The Destruction of the prophet Nuh's People by Drowning

But they rejected him, and We delivered him, and those with him, in the Ark: but We overwhelmed in the flood those who rejected Our signs. They were indeed a blind people! (Surat al-Araf: 64)

Thereafter We drowned those who remained behind. (Surat ash-Shuara: 120)

We (once) sent Nuh to his people, and he tarried among them a thousand years less fifty: but the Deluge overwhelmed them while they (persisted in) sin. (Surat al-Ankaboot: 14)

We saved him and those who adhered to him. By Our mercy, and We cut off the roots of those who rejected Our signs and did not believe. (Surat al-Araf: 72)

The Destruction of the Prophet Nuh's "Son"

The Qur'an relates a dialogue between Nuh and his son, in the early stages of the Flood;

So the Ark floated with them on the waves (towering) like mountains, and Nuh called out to his son, who had separated himself (from the rest): "O my son! embark with us, and be not with the unbelievers!" The son replied: "I will betake myself to some mountain: it will save me from the water." Nuh said: "This day nothing can save, from the command of Allah, any but those on whom He hath mercy!" And the waves came between them, and the son was among those overwhelmed in the Flood. (Surah Hud: 42-43)

Saving the Believers from the Flood

So We delivered him and those with him, in the Ark filled (with all creatures). (Surat ash-Shuara: 119)

But We saved him and the companions of the Ark, and We made the (Ark) a Sign for all peoples! (Surat al-Ankaboot: 15)

The Physical Nature of the Flood

So We opened the gates of heaven, with water pouring forth. And We caused the earth to gush forth with springs, so the waters met (and rose) to the extent decreed. But We bore him on an (Ark) made of broad planks and caulked with palm-fibre: (Surat al-Qamar: 11-13)

At length, behold! there came Our command, and the fountains of the earth gushed forth! We said: "Embark therein, of each kind two, male and female, and your family - except those against whom the word has already gone forth - and the Believers." but only a few believed with him.

So the Ark floated with them on the waves (towering) like mountains, and Nuh called out to his son, who had separated himself (from the rest): "O my son! embark with us, and be not with the unbelievers!"(Surah Hud: 40-42)

So We inspired him (with this message): "Construct the Ark within Our sight and under Our guidance: then when comes Our Command, and the fountains of the earth gush forth, take thou on board pairs of every species, male and female, and thy family- except those of them against whom the Word has already gone forth: And address Me not in favour of the wrong-doers; for they shall be drowned (in the Flood)." (Surat al-Mumenoon: 27)

The Resting of the Ark on a High Place

Then the word went forth: "O earth! swallow up thy water, and O sky! Withhold (thy rain)!" and the water abated, and the matter was ended. The Ark rested on Mount Judi, and the word went forth: "Away with those who do wrong!" (Surah Hud: 44)

The Instructional Aspect of the Flood Incident

We, when the water (of Nuh's Flood) overflowed beyond its limits, carried you (mankind), in the floating (Ark), That We might make it a Message unto you, and that ears (that should hear the tale and) retain its memory should bear its (lessons) in remembrance. (Surat al-Haaqqa: 11-12)

Allah's Praise of the Prophet Nuh

Peace and salutation to Nuh among the nations! Thus indeed do we reward those who do right. For he was one of our believing Servants. (Surat as-Saaffat: 79-81)

What race is a Muslim?

Muslims do not belong to one race or country. There are Muslims from all over the globe, from different countries, cultures and of different skin colour. Islam is a religion which means it is open to all who wish to embrace it.

What are the main beliefs of the Christian religion?

Why was the migration to Medina so important?

The Quiraishi tribe, Mohamed's own kinsmen, nearly killed him, and they had killed most of his followers. In fact when he arrived in Medina, he was badly wounded and, get this, he was treated by a Jewish doctor, or healer, it was one of those, that is why the Koran INITIALLY speaks favorably about the Jews. If you look at Koran chapters in chronological order that is; the Koran is not arranged chronologically that is, not the order in which Mohamed received his "revelations." Sorry for the use of quotes I'm not a muslim.

Medina, was deeply disatisfied with the power of the Quraishi tribe in the south, so the pool of people there, was ripe for the recruitment of followers. In fact, many Jews converted right off the bat, they were not forced, they hated the Quraishi so much. However other Jews were business partners, and therefore enemies of Mohamed, that is why they were either exhiled or executed.

Why is Islam a religious term?

Because it is the name of a Religion.

Why do Muslims call their god Allah?

Allah is just the Arabic word for God. AnswerWe Muslims prefer the Arabic and pure name Allah to God because we believe in the Oneness of god and He has no partners or helpers. Allah is a unique name and its form cannot be changed with grammar or language, unlike the word 'god'. For example, by adding 's' to god, it becomes its plural "Gods", whereas there is no such thing like Allah's.. Similarly by joining 'ess' god becomes feminine that is, "Goddess". But there is nothing like a male Allah or a female Allah..... There are many more such examples .

So this is the prime reason why we Muslims do not prefer to use the word "God" and instead use the word 'Allah' since it is the true name of our Lord as mentioned in the Quran.

Answer

Yes Allah is the Arabic word for God. It is not the same God as revealed in the Old Testament. Christians usually don't acknowledge that Allah is the same as God because when God revealed Himself to Abraham, He referred to Himself as Yahweh, not Allah. There is, no matter what you are told, a difference.

Answer

Allahu ta'âlâ's Names are tawqîfî; that is, it is permissible to use His Names shown by Islam and not permissible to use other names. For instance, Allahu ta'âlâ may be called "Âlim" (the Omniscient), but it is not permissible to use "faqîh" which also means "Âlim," for Islam does not use "faqîh" for Allahu ta'âlâ. There is no religious obstacle to using the word "god" in the meaning of "ilâh." For example, it is permissible to say, "Ox is the god of Hindus" or "Allah is one; there is no god but He" or "Our god is Allah." But it is not permissible to say, "Our Allah is God." You should understand this fine point well.

(Ilâh: God. God means ma'bûd [that which, or who, is, or is to be worshiped]. Anything which is worshiped is called a god. The Name of Allahu ta'âlâ is Allah, not God. There is no ilâh [god] besides Allah.)

Allahu ta'âlâ'a Names are infinite. It is well-known that He has one thousand and one Names; that is, He revealed one thousand and one of His Names to human beings. In Islam, ninety-nine of them, called Asmâ-ul Husnâ, were revealed.

It is not permissible to say "God" instead of the Name "Allah" or "Allah" instead of the name "God," because god means ilâh, idol. As Assyrians accustomed the Turks to worshiping the sun and stars, they would worship the sun when it dawned. For this reason, the sun's name became tanyeri and finally tanrı (god).

The word Allah is a proper name. There is no equivalent for it in any languages. This word does not have masculine or feminine form. However, the word "god" has equivalents in every language and also masculine and feminine forms in some of them, e.g., ma'bud and ma'buda (in Arabic), tanrı and tanrıça (in Turkish), God and Goddess (in English), Dieu and Deesse (in French), and Gott and Göttin (in German). None of these words can be used instead of the name Allah. It is necessary to use only the word Allah when you refer to Allah, because Allahu ta'âlâ declares, "My name is Allah. Worship Me by saying Allah." We must use the word He has commanded us to use. When the word ilâh is meant, all nations can use its equivalents in their own languages, but the word Allah is the same in all languages. (Endless Bliss)

It is purported in the Qur'ân al-karîm:

(Allah is only one god.) [Sûrat-ul-Nisâ', 171]

(I am Allah. There is no god but I.) [Sûrat-u Tâhâ, 14]

(Your Mawlâ is Allah.) [Sûrat-u Âl-i 'Imrân, 150]

My boyfriend is Muslim and to marry him I am told I must convert but don't want to so what do I do?

This may depend on where you live, and how much each of you is willing to compromise. Muhammad prohibited Muslim women from marrying non-Muslim men, but countenanced Muslim men marrying non-muslim women. Nevertheless, in some Muslim countries you may have no choice. Remember that Barack Obama's father was Muslim, while his mother was Christian, so there is no absolute requirement for you to convert. Once again, it depends on where you live and how much you, your boyfriend and each family are willing to compromise.

What is Islamic marriage?

There is no set format for an Islamic wedding, and they vary from country to country and even from family to family.

What is required is that the bride, groom, and the bride's father (or other close male relative) agree to the marriage, the groom gives the bride a gift, there are at least two male Muslim witnesses, the groom sacrifices (or arranges for the sacrifice of) an animal such as a sheep, that part of the meat is given to the poor, and that the groom hosts a party to celebrate and advertise the fact that the marriage has taken place.

Why do Muslims call cristians and Jews people of the book?

They call them people of the book as Christians are holders of the God Bible holy book and Jews are holders of the God Torah holy book. Muslims call Christians and Jews to worship God as the one and only one with no partner, no associate, no companion, and no equivalence.

God sent books (revelations) to the people pf those two religions as He revealed the Torah (old testament) to the Jews through prophet Musa (Moses) and He revealed the bible (new testament) to the Christians through prophet ESa (Jesus) - peace be upon them all - and that's something they have in common with Muslims who received the last and final revelation from God to mankind - the Quran that was revealed by God to prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him).

Muslims call Christians and Jews to worship God as the one and only one with no partner, no associate, no companion, and no equivalence.

They call them people of the book as Christians are holders of the God Bible holy book and Jews are holders of the God Torah holy book.

Are women allowed to vote in Saudi Arabia?

No

Women in Saudi Arabia are banned from voting

As a matter of fact, it is one of very few remaining countries where women still cannot vote
