Digital Rights Management (DRM) is a generic term that covers many types of protective measures used to prevent the copying and distribution of digital media. As such no individual or company invented DRM.

Copyright holders have always sought means to control the illicit copying and distribution of their products. With the arrival of digital media it was possible for users to create perfect copies of the media and so many companies devised schemes to prevent copying. The earliest forms of DRM, from around 1996, limited the use of the physical disc that held the digital media. Film companies imposed a Content Scrambling System to films released on DVD and record companies, most notably Sony, introduced CDs that secretly installed software on a users computer to prevent the duplication of the CD. This software only worked on computers running the Windows operating system and was found to compromise the security of the computer. It has since been abandoned.

With the coming of the Internet it became increasingly easy to illicitly duplicate and then distribute media files and a system of protecting individual files was created first by Microsoft with their Windows Media DRM in 1999. When Apple launched the iTunes store in 2003 the record companies insisted on a DRM system to protect their material and so Apple added their FairPlay DRM to files supplied from the iTunes store. Apple has since convinced the record companies this was a bad idea and has dropped the use of DRM protection from the music files.

For syncing to an iPod, you can use EphPod (free) or Anapod Explorer (about $30). Both may have trouble supporting newer iPods, with Anapod having better support.

For purchasing music, you may wish to stick to a web-based store, such as at Wal-Mart or Amazon MP3.

For playing music, there are many free media players, such as Windows Media Player 9 or WinAmp (up to 5.35).

People buy songs because they enjoy the music and wish to own a copy for themselves. By buying songs they are giving something back to the performer who can thus continue to create new songs that they may also enjoy and buy. The buyer of songs knows that their purchase ensures that they are not liable to be prosecuted for stealing songs, with a potential large fine and seizure of their computers and/or audio equipment.

You must connect the iPod with the computer you have already used before to download the music, if you autofill or sync it the music will be the same though you might want to check the autofill details by pressing on the iPod under Device and looking at details or whatever the name of it is by the autofill buttom

The exclamation mark indicates that iTunes has forgotten where the library of music/videos is located. If there are not too many you can double click on the individual titles and then show iTunes where the file is located - on a Mac that is usually in the iTunes folder within the Music folder (on a Windows machine it will be something like My Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/). With iTunes 10 it is smart enough to know that most of the other missing files will be in the same place and so it will ask you if you want it to check for the other missing files at the same location.

Alternatively you can try opening iTunes preferences and under the Advanced tab click the Change... button to show iTunes where the media library is located. Or drag the required files from the Music folder back into the iTunes window so it rebuilds the library.

Right click the file and choose get info. If that doesn't solve the problem it's either due to a file permission problem or a file format problem.

Check if your user is the owner of the file and if the file format is supported by iTunes. If not you will have to convert it to a supported format.

iTunes is like a librarian who takes care of a large library with many departments, such as 'Videos' 'Books' 'Music' and 'Apps,' and connections to other libraries such as 'The iTunes Store.'

It expects things to be where it remembers them. It expects connections to work. It expects its environment to be healthy and comfortable.

But sometimes something is not working as expected.

Perhaps the connection to the update server is down. Maybe an external hard drive has been ejected. Maybe its library directory has become corrupted, or accidentally moved.

iTunes tries to tell the user where the error occurred. So you have to go to Apple and look up the error codes for iTunes and follow the instructions to correct the problem.

A pane is a single element that combine with others to create a window (as panes of glass make up a window). In iTunes the left hand column, for example, is known as the Source Pane as it is used to determine which source iTunes will use - the Music Library, a playlist, a CD, a radio source etc. The individual elements of the iTunes Preferences are also known as Panes - General pane, Sharing pane, Devices pane etc.
