I think that he was desperately torn apart- any father would be and I'm sure Michael's dad didn't whip Michael out of cruelty and hatred but only to benefit him because he wanted to see him shine in life. If Michael's dad had been cruel to Michael, it was probably due to the fact that he had been a failed musician and he most certianly did not want anything like that to happen to his sons- his actions were probably for protection and love.
