The Jeep was invented in 1941 for the U.S. Military by The American Bantam car company. The final production was awarded to Willys as the military felt Bantam was too small a company to produce the necessary numbers needed. Ford also built the Jeep for the military using the Willys plans. Bantam, which was the inventor, produced only trailers for the Army and never made the Jeep. Willys called their Jeep the Model MB and Ford called theirs the Model GPW. Jeep was never a name the military used. It was only a nickname in the beginning.

I had a 99 grand cherokee ltd and I've experienced the death wobble. That time for my Jeep they balance the front tires and permanently solved the problem. Now, I have another jeep ( same year and model, 4.7 V8 ) and this time balancing the tires did not solve the problem. It wasn't alignment neither although we think it is. Is actually several problems after my mechanic put it up on the hoist and used a giant clamp to inspect the parts under the truck's front and determined this; worn outer tie rods ends (left side and right side), worn tie rod ends(both sides), The entired drag link complete or kit needed to changed, the adjustment sleeves( both sleeves needed changed). He showed me the problem and I saw that those parts were loose and moving side to side and up and down. So yeah, either tire needs balance, alignment or what i just mentioned here above. And oh, not only my jeep shakes it also pulls to the right when let go of the steering wheel. My mechanic is a factory trained technician and have 20 years of experiences. we when for a spin and he said it wasn't the alignment although it appears that way, is all them parts (under) needed to changed.

i didnt have to. you may check out jeepforum.com that site has many build and the issues or mods they have done. im looking into swaping a zj front shaft for my rear shaft in my xj. they say it will gain you a little length plus add the cv style shaft giving it the slip yoke elimintor touch with out breaking the bank. but all jepps are different you may have (little) vibration but i would say dont worry about it.

By 1939 the US military needed a new, universal vehicle to replace the motorcycle and its other vehicles (such as the modified Ford Model-T), so they invited 135 different car companies to compete for a contract to build a new vehicle for the military. The vehicle had to meet certain specs, such as a payload capacity of 600lbs, a wheelbase under 75 inches, a fold-down windshield, a gross vehicle weight of under 1200lbs, and it must be four-wheel drive. Only three companies entered, Bantam, Willy-Overland, and Ford.
Bantam enlisted the help of Karl Probst, and in 1940 was the first to produce a working prototype for the military, dubbed the Bantam Blitzbuggy and "Old Number One". Willy's-Overland and Ford soon followed with their own prototypes, the Willys Quad and the Ford Pygmy, which were basically knock-offs of the Bantam car. Willys eventually won the contract because of their 60hp "Go-Devil" engine, but Ford was also given a contract to help keep up with the military's demand for the vehicles for use in WWII. Willys later renamed their jeeps the MA and the MB, while Ford called theirs the GP and GPW. Many believe, as I do, that the Jeep won the war for the Allies.
As for the name 'Jeep', no one really knows for sure where it came from. Some people believe that it evolved from the Ford 'GP' designation, which many think stood for 'general purpose', which is incorrect. The "G" was for Government and the "P" was the vehicle class (80" wheelbase 4x4 ¼ ton truck). Another possibility is that the name came from Popeye's magical sidekick named jeep, who could do almost anything. pull on the edge of the horn button to remove it - then unscrew the 3 Phillips head screws that hold the inner horn assembly to the wheel ( do yourself a favor and unplug the horn under the hood before doing this or every peice of metal you touch makes the horn sound) - then remove the large nut in the middle of the steering wheel - next get a wheel puller and 2 bolts that thread into the 2 larger holes beside the steering shaft - a couple turns on the wheel puller and it comes right off

I really have not heard the term oil pump switch. There is an oil pressure switch on some small engines that will shut the engine down if the oil pressure falls below a preset pressure. These are not installed on vehicles for safety reasons. You vehicle however has an oil pressure sending unit that keeps track of the oil pressure and will warn you of low oil pressure with a red light, or by way of a gage, or both.
