Where is the engine made for the john deere lawn tractors?
They are made by Briggs & Stratton corp and re-badged as a John Deere engine. Deere does specify what quality level of parts are used in their engines. Things like Stellite or standard valves, ball bearing PTO bearings or a sleeve bushing for the crankshaft and camshaft, cylinder liner material, carburetion, air filtration and exhaust components, starter quality, air shrouding for different applications hardened push rods or not, alloy or aluminum piston, chrome piston rings or standard and so on. This allows then to built engines to a price point depending on application yet leaves the consumer with limited information regarding the engine quality.
Many manufacturers purchase "off the shelf" engines. Briggs makes several engines at price points and standard equipment. For tractors there is, from low end to high; Power-built, Intek , intek pro, intek pro with XRD, Extended Life series, Commercial turf series, and the top of the line Vanguard Series.
John Deere may start with an Intek for their L/LA series machines. They will then pick and choose the internal component's. For instance they will spec and aluminum piston and standard rings vs. the standard alloy piston with chrome rings, a non forged crankshaft, standard valves, base air filtration vs the dual stage, a non-Teflon impregnated crank bushing vs the Teflon and so on.
This is a play on marketing as Deere will market it as "specially made for John Deere" creating the illusion that the consumer is getting a higher end engine when they actually are getting a very low end piece.
However, in many cases, Briggs will not agree to the requirements put forth because they have a reputation to protect. In such a case, a price is negotiated that allows Briggs to maintain a reputation of a well built engine. Briggs may eat the cost of an alloy piston and chrome rings in order to get the sale.
One item to look for when purchasing a tractor is the EPA sticker on the engine. It will state how long, on average, that engine will meet EPA emission standards. A poorly built engine may be as low as 50 hours (many Chinese engines) or as high as 1k hours. This figure will give you an idea how long the engine will maintain its integrity. Beyond the stated hours, the engine will likely not meet emissions because internal components have worn excessively, compression has decreased, valves don't seat well, the engine has excessive wear, enough so that combustion is poor and/or oil control has deteriorated.

The GX345 is a pretty stout machine and should last 30+ years, However, if you wish to replace it you will need to get a 520 series minimum, a 720 is a bit stouter than your 345. The 520 will cost around 7k with a deck and blower, 720 around 11k.
Keep in mind the 300 series are much lighter duty today than your 345 is. The weak point on the new ones are the transmission and limited attachments.
