Petra was discovered on August 22, 1812. The man who discovered the historical city was Johann Burckhardt. Burckhardt was a well-to-do Swiss explorer.

No one really knows how long it took to build the stone city of Petra. It was thought to be the capital city of the Nabateans and was begun about 312 BC.
