How do you get lint off a black dress?
If you don't have a lint remover, use masking or scotch tape - unroll/wrap it around your hand sticky side out, then pat the fabric down until it's covered with lint to the point there's no adhesive showing. If it needs more, redo the procedure.
Another way is by using a dryer and a fabric softener sheet that you put in a dryer with a load of clothes. Just set the temperature to a low setting, then put the two in. The fabric sheet neutralizes the static which holds the lint on, and the dryer (if it's a good one) should pull the lint off. Of course it depends on the fabric in question as to whether or not you can do it this way. The tape method is the easiest.

My GE washing machine does not dry my clothe?
My GE washing machine does not wring my clothes dry enough what do i need to do?
The spin cycle is not working well. You can try running the spin cycle a second time. Also, make sure that you have not overfilled the machine. In my experience, this is the main reason for replacing an older machine.
What was laundry like in the Civil War?
In many cases, there was a laundress for every 17-20 men, 4 per company. The laundress was in the army and paid by the guys. Ballparking it, she got like, .50 monthly from each enlisted man (this was deducted before he got paid) and anywhere from $1-$2. for an unmarried officer, up to $4. monthly for a married officer. If the officers had families, the family's laundry was extra, usually per piece as agreed upon by the officer and the laundress. She got a tent, rations, a hatchet, and surgeon's services were available to her. Laundresses were sometimes wives of the officers, freed women/slaves or just women experiencing hardship who needed to work. The women were usually attached somehow to a male soldier. The laundry, sometimes known as Suds Row, was in camp or a fort. Laundresses did not accompany the men when they were on the move. It was an incredibly hard, exhausting and time consuming job.
There is a wonderful and very informative youtube video that will walk you through the process if you search under Civil War Laundry
Is horse fat in fabric softener?
No. Early fabric softeners incorporated "treated" tallow, oil or fat mixed with a bit of soap in some kind emulsion to cut the "harsh" feel that cotton and similar fabrics picked up when dried. The new softeners are wonders of modern chemistry, and will contain fatty alcohols that are pretty much all derived from plants rather than animals. There are a number of other chemicals in softners that act to fortify or produce different features. Silicon compounds will usually be present, as will agents to reduce foaming, as well as add fragrance and color to the product. If you've got a bit of patience and access to the net, you can grab a product label and educate yourself. Most if not all the information is there online. A link is provided below for further reading. You don't have to be a chemist to understand the "gist" of the article, but some of the data are going to be a bit on the "compelx" side. And there is always WikiAnswers for more information. Best of luck sorting things out.
Should you wash your bed sheets before use?
Definitely yes.
There is chemical residue left over from the dyeing and manufacturing process - same with new clothes. Your skin is your largest organ and you don't want to be absorbing those chemical compounds.
I would say, even if you are buying organic cotton sheets -
it would still be a good idea to wash them
... and best to wash in soap that has no harsh chemicals - like

Can you wash clothes that have gasoline on them in a washing machine?
It is not recommended to wash clothes that have gasoline on them in a washing machine. The gasoline can be a fire hazard inside the machine and can also pose a risk of leaving residue in the machine, which could be dangerous when washing other clothes. Instead, it is best to hand wash the clothes in a well-ventilated area using gloves and a mild detergent.
