Try soaking the clothes in all-purpose orange cleaner, or one cup of lemon-scented household cleaner, prior to washing them on the heavy cycle. Be sure to smell the clothes for any remaining scent prior to drying them. If they still smell like diesel, run them through the washer again. Drying them will just set the smell in more.

An old school method is to pour a can or two of Coca Cola in with your laundry load -- it is a great degreaser.

Do you have a window ? If so leave it open in the dry weather and get a small fan and leave that on as often as possible - a fan that you can move around and direct at specific places would be good. The mildew is also very bad for your health - be careful.

Hang it on a clothes line outdoors on a warm, sunny, breezy day. The sun will help kill any bacteria that may be causing the odors, and the sun and breeze will give it a nice, fresh scent. Hang it out in the morning and leave it there all day. Just be sure to bring it indoors before the dew falls in the evening, to prevent moisture from getting on it. You can also do this with pillows, as well.

Don't wash it with towels, or anything else that tends to have a lot of lint/fuzz. Also, don't over load the washer, which will cause more friction on the clothes, which, in turn, causes more "piling" of the garments. You can also turn the shirt inside out before washing and drying, which will help, as well.
