The current war in Libya was caused by Gadaffi when he ordered the bombing of civilians in his own country.

But no one would have done anything about it if it wasn't for the oil.

Technically, no. War has not been declared, and we are not sending in ground troops. We do have air and naval support in for the rebels, but we have bombed a number of nations without declaring war.

It was just a coincidence. The reason why France attacked Libya is because they are part of the UN and the UN declared war on Libya for ignoring the cease fire commands from the UN and massacering/ mutilating innocent civilians.

My thought was that perhaps because France was not onboard with the U.S. invasion of Iraq, that France was sending a message to the U.S. and Britain that "when the cause is just, you can count on France to be the first to cross the proverbial line drawn in the sand (Lt. Col. Travis - Alamo 1836).

The origin of the name Libya is the ancient Berber tribe Ribu or RB. This Berber (or Tamazight) tribe inhabited the eastern shores of Libya, all the way to the Nile river, and hence the Egyptians were among the first people to preserve this name in writing. From 106 BC to 642 AD Libya was under Roman rule. From 642 AD to 1551 AD it was under Arab Islamic rule. Spain invaded Libya in 1551, but lost control of Libya to the Ottomans fairly quickly. they then ruled Libya until 1911, when it became an Italian colony. The Italians then ruled Libya until 1951 when the United Nations ruled that Libya should be independent. So from 1951 Libya became a monarchary under King Idris, who was Libya's first and only monarch. This lasted until 1969 when a coup led by the army officer Muammar Gaddafi took control of the country.
