What time of year can you trim a lilac tree?

New lilac bushes don't require maintenance pruning until they are about 6 - 8' tall. The time to prune mature lilac plants is just after the flowers have faded. They set the next season's flower buds almost immediately, so late pruning will mean sacrificing next year's flowers. Pruning early also gives the new shoots more energy to develop.

How do you pronounce lilac?

It is pronounced Lie luh or at least that is how my name is pronounced :-)

Is it to late in the spring to transplant a lilac bush if it is blooming?

Vine lilac that is infested with spider egg sacks you used HotShot spider killer and now the plant is dead Did the poison kill the plant or did the spider sacks?

Spider egg sacks wouldn't kill a plant. I looked up the product you used and it specifically says not to spray it around people, pets, or plants. It was the Hot Shot that killed the plant.

Is lilac wood toxic?

Lilacs are not toxic. But you would want to discourage critters from eating lilac wood because it will cut back the flowers.

How much can you trim off a 15 foot lilac tree?

Prune lightly, cut back flowered shoots to strong buds on lower growth. To maintain or create shape it is possible, on established plants, to cut back one quarter of old shoots to the base to promote replacement growth. This can be done annually after flowering

What would be killing a dwarf lilac bush that has a dying branch each week and has been treated for borers?

I have the same problem. I have lost one dwarf lilac bush all ready and now it looks like the one next to it is starting to die. I was told the first one that died had Gurgling (sp) root disease. The root starts to wrap around itself and chokes off the other roots. Has anyone heard of this? Also is there any cure?

See the web link to the left for some general information on lilac problems.
