It was the Mormon Cricket, not locusts, that swarmed and began to destroy the Mormon's crops. The "Mormon Cricket" is actually not a cricket at all, it is a migratory shieldbacked katydid common in many western states. Mormon Crickets are known to periodically form large swarms, which is exactly what happened to the Mormons.

The Mormon's crops were saved by California Gulls, which came in and ate the crickets. Today, Utah's state bird is the California Gull, in honor of their saving the Mormon pioneers in this "Miracle of the Gulls".

However a locust swarm can be so invasive that it disturbs all local wildlife and insect populations which may in turn cause dragonflies to be more active simply because they are being annoying by the locusts invasion. But than again, a locust swarm does that to many things.

i bought some as lizard food from the reptile shop. i put them in a tank with some lettuace and so far they are doing ok.

The locust The locust has biting-chewing mouthparts and mainly lives on leaves of plants. The mouthparts consist of: a) The labrum or upper lip in front covers and protects the other mouthparts. It prevents food from falling out the mouth. b) The two mandibles or hard upper jaws have sharp, serrated edges. They move side- ways and rasp of minute pieces of food which are grinded and chewed and swallowed c) The two maxillae or soft lower jaws are used to hold and to push the food into the mouth. The maxillary palps are sensitive and taste the food. d) The labium or lower lip at the back prevents food from falling out the mouth. The labial palps selects, taste and handle food.

Many people who do not know what a cicada is will refer to it as a locust since they do come out every so many years (17-year-cicadas and 13-year-cicadas). Both insects feed on vegetation and migrate in swarms.

In short, a locust looks much like a large grasshopper :)

If you really love this person don't trap them in a corner. Sit down or go for a walk and ask this person straight out to explain their fears. You'd be surprised what you might hear, but it's workable.

When I met my 2nd husband he was very shy and terrified of a serious relationship. You "get through to him" by showing respect for him and what he is feeling. If you love him, then wait as long as you can. Once you cannot wait any more, you'll have to let him know. At that time, he'll probably need some time away from you to figure out how much you actually do mean to him or to shake him up and not take you for granted. If he doesn't come back or want to go farther with the relationship, odds are he would not have anyway.
